Shoprite warns of data 'compromise'
The Shoprite Group - which offers global money transfers to 100 different countries - has warned of a suspected data "compromise".
Customers who did money transfers to and within Eswatini and within Namibia and Zambia may be affected.
The data compromise included names and identity numbers, but no financial information or bank account numbers.
While Shoprite says it not aware of any misuse or publication of customer data that may have been acquired, it said it may still be used by the "unauthorised party".
Customers are asked not to disclose personal information such as passwords and PINs when asked to do so by anyone via telephone, SMS or email.
"Affected customers will receive an SMS to the cell number supplied at the time of the transaction," Shoprite said. Forensic experts and other data security professionals are investigating the incident.-Fin24
Mercedes-Benz recalls cars in SA
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has urged some South African Mercedes-Benz owners to stop driving their cars, following a global recall.
The recall relates to possible brake failure due to corrosion in the housing joining points of the Mercedes-Benz ML, GL (model series 164) and R-Class (model series 251), manufactured between 2006 and 2019.
In a statement, the commission said the recall affects 13 159 cars in South Africa.
"We understand that the defect may lead to a possible brake failure which may lead to accidents and injuries," said Acting National Consumer Commissioner Thezi Mabuza.
She added that consumers should stop driving the cars and contact Mercedes-Benz for further details on: 0800 133 355.
The NCC is monitoring the recall. -Fin24
Foschini plans new platform with other brands
The Foschini Group (TFG) is planning a new "omni-channel platform" – which its CEO says will be a first for South Africa.
"The entire product catalogue is being migrated. This will create a home for all of our brands and other businesses that want to leverage TFG's scale, bringing over 200 of the world's best brands and more than 2 000 new styles a week on to one platform to provide an unrivalled selection across fashion and lifestyle goods," CEO Anthony Thunström said during the group's results announcement on Friday.
Thunström said the new platform will bring all of the TFG brands together, along with third-party vendors.
"We want to create the most remarkable omni-channel experiences for our customers. All I can say is 'watch this space'."
TFG launched a single online shopping platform with 17 of its brands – called myTFGworld.com - in 2018. The platform gave shoppers access to products from the 17 TFG brands currently trading online, including @home, Donna, Foschini, Markham, and Totalsports. -Fin24
McDonald's restaurants reopen in Russia
Mcdonald’s flung open its doors in Moscow once again on Sunday (June 12), but under new branding and Russian ownership.
The new dawn for Russia’s fast-food scene will initially see 15 branded restaurants open in the capital, under the name Vkusno & tochka, meaning “Tasty & that’s it”.
It comes almost a month after the US burger giant turned pulled out of the country over what Russia calls a "special military operation" in Ukraine.
Chief Executive Oleg Paroev was appointed Russia McDonald's CEO weeks before Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine.
He said the company was planning to reopen 200 restaurants by the end of June and all 850 by the end of the summer. Alexander Govor, the new owner of the Russian chain confined expansion was on the cards. -Reuters
FNB, Discovery Bank refund clients
Discovery Bank will immediately refund Vitality clients affected by Comair going into liquidation.
Comair operated its own low-cost airline kulula.com as well as local and regional flights under a British Airways franchise agreement.
Comair has been in business rescue for two years and its business rescue practitioners (BRPs) had to suspend flights on 31 May due to a lack of further funding to continue operations. Last week they announced that they have had to apply for liquidation.
"To assist our clients, for any Vitality member who is a Discovery Bank client and booked a discounted flight departing from 1 June 2022 onwards that has been cancelled due to this issue, Discovery Bank will automatically refund the amount spent on that flight into the Vitality member's Discovery Bank account by close of business on Friday, 10 June 2022," Discovery Bank said in a statement.
The refund process is automatic, so no action is required from members. -Fin24
