Oshivela plant to show off
The world's first zero emissions iron refinery
STAFF REPORTER
The Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) has announced the official opening of the HyIron Oshivela Plant for this week Friday. HyIron, one of the investment projects facilitated by the NIPDB, broke ground in November 2023 and started construction in April 2024.

Industrialisation and the decarbonisation of the steel industry is one of the biggest challenges in the global fight against climate change. With increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) and energy prices, the steel industry needs to develop climate-friendly technologies and value chains.

HyIron, a partnership between Namibian and German companies, has developed a technology to effectively address this challenge by producing Iron at zero emissions.

With support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), HyIron has built the world’s first industrial production of green iron in the context of the Oshivela project here in Namibia.
