Mitsubishi Triton raises the bakkie bar
Challenge accepted
The Next-Gen Triton will be offered with the most extensive model range ever along with a variety of approved accessories.
Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA) is proud to announce the arrival of the Next-Gen Triton, an evolution in the iconic bakkie’s 46-year legacy. Building on a history of toughness, reliability and adventure, the new Triton is designed to challenge expectations in the South African market by offering a bakkie that is tough, stylish and versatile enough to meet the demands of both urban and adventure-loving South Africans.
The Next-Gen Triton is an extremely important model as it is the first global strategic vehicle to be rolled out at the start of the brand's growth phase.
With a diverse model range, exclusive locally tailored editions, and the strongest warranty in its class, the Next-Gen Triton is ready to take on any challenge with confidence. Challenge Accepted.
A legacy of toughness
Mitsubishi’s Triton has long been a favourite among South African drivers, a reputation built on the brand’s heritage and the success of the iconic Colt. Since then, the Triton has continued to grow and evolve, offering a balance of rugged performance, cutting-edge design, and modern technology. The Next-Gen Triton marks a new chapter in this legacy, with advancements in comfort, performance, safety, and versatility.
“The South African bakkie market is an extremely competitive environment but we believe that the Next-Gen Triton not only accepts this challenge but also raises the bar with a range of models that allow drivers to define their own adventure. The Next-Gen Triton range offers tailored special editions and the strongest warranty in class as it invites South Africans to embrace the journey ahead,” says Jeffrey Allison, General Manager: Marketing at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA).
Evolved to meet the needs of modern day bakkie owners
Now in its sixth generation, the Next-Gen Triton has been completely redesigned from the ground up. All elements including the interior and exterior design as well as the chassis, ladder frame and engine have been completely reimagined.
With a reputation for toughness to live up to it has evolved to meet the needs of the modern day bakkie owner.
Award winner
Since making its global debut a year ago the Next-Gen Mitsubishi Triton has received a variety of prestigious awards including a special award at the RJC Car of the Year for 2025 run by the Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan (RJC), an iF Design Award 2024 in the product design discipline and the 2023 Good Design Award presented by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion amongst a host of others.
Rugged design
Based on the Beast Mode design concept, the Next-Gen Triton combines the Mitsubishi Motors design with the toughness and strength expected of a bakkie, while at the same time demonstrating an imposing stance with ruggedness and agility.
The frontal design incorporates the Dynamic Shield which is now accentuated by a robust, three-dimensional front grille, fenders and a bumper that emphasise this form. The daytime running lights feature three L-shaped LED lights which resemble the sharp gaze of a hawk, which in combination with the three-dimensional three-light headlights below them, gives the Next-Gen Triton a commanding presence.
The horizontally themed body sides are composed of large, solid surfaces which emphasise the robust doors, while contrasting with the sharply overhanging fender panels, in that way emphasising stability and toughness. The cabin shape and rear spoiler have been designed with optimum aerodynamic efficiency in mind.
At the rear T-shaped taillights on both sides emphasise width while also enforcing the sturdy design.
Spacious, high-quality interior
The interior is designed for comfort, with advanced technology and a thoughtfully crafted space that enhances the ability to enjoy the ride, no matter where the journey takes you.
A spacious, refined cabin with high-quality materials and advanced noise-reduction technology creates a comfortable driving experience, whether you’re navigating city streets or open trails.
The interior features a robust, horizontally themed instrument panel that allows drivers to easily see changes in the position of the vehicle while driving. A variety of geometric shapes and metallic elements are in place to create a high-contrast, modern space.
An eight-inch infotainment system is positioned at eye level for ease of use and features smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and an easy-to-read display. Ahead of the driver is a seven-inch multi-information display that offers all the necessary information at a glance and allows drivers to easily understand the vehicle’s status.
Designers paid particular attention to the appearance of the display and gauges which make use of contrast and switches that feature the optimum level of sensitivity. The steering wheel, grips and door handles have all been designed based on an approach called Mitsubishi Touch, with a focus on grip comfort and sturdiness.
The centre console features cup holders that can accommodate two large cups while the console box can hold four 600ml plastic bottles.
The Next-Gen Triton is approximately 50mm wider than the previous Triton, which translates into excellent shoulder room. Front seat adjustment range in all models is also segment leading. Rear seats in double cab models offer class leading shoulder and knee room by a significant margin, thanks in part to front seat backs that were designed with this in mind.
The front seats have been designed to provide firm lower back support while the shoulder areas provide ease of movement with an open shape, which helps to reduce driver fatigue. The hip point has also been moved up by 20mm with a more upright posture adopted to improve visibility. Ingress and egress have been improved thanks to a more vertical A-pillar which also widens the door openings.
First class safety
The Next-Gen Triton has also evolved in terms of its safety equipment. Central to this is the Super Select II system with Active Yaw Control, developed with expertise from Mitsubishi’s Rally history and first seen in the Lancer Evolution 10, it ensures excellent traction and superior stability and handling on all surface types.
Active Yaw Control improves cornering performance by applying light braking to the inside front wheel when cornering. This works by applying the brake to a spinning wheel and distributing the driving torque to wheels gripping the road surface, improving safety on slippery surfaces while also providing a sporty driving experience.
The Next-Gen Triton is fitted with a wide variety of meaningful safety features tailored for the South African market and conditions. Active Stability & Traction Control (ASTC) which improves stability on winding roads is standard on all models. Hill Descent Control (HDC) maintains a set speed on downhill slopes to enable driving with confidence without the need for the driver to apply the brakes and Hill Start Assist (HSA), prevents roll-back during hill starts.
All Mitsubishi Triton models are built with the inherent safety that the Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution Body Construction (RISE) offers while also incorporating side-impact protection bars.
Passive safety includes driver and passenger airbags on single cab models. Double cab GL models are equipped with driver, driver knee and passenger airbags while all other derivatives add front, side and curtain front and rear airbags in addition.
All-new turbodiesel engine
A newly developed 4N16 DI-DC engine utilises a variable geometry turbocharger to achieve improved output and improved environmental performance as well as powerful acceleration and responsiveness thanks impressive power and torque figures of 135kW at 3 500rpm and 430Nm between 2 250 and 2 500rpm.
This engine is paired to either a six-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission with shift by wire technology.
GL models are fitted with a 2.4-litre DI-DC engine that offers 81kW at 4000 rpm and 200Nm between 1000 and 3750 rpm and which is paired to a five-speed manual transmission.
New chassis and suspension
The Next-Gen Mitsubishi Triton rides on an all-new chassis frame that is the backbone to its improved overall performance. High tensile materials absorb road noise and vibrations for a comfortable and safe driving experience that minimises stress and fatigue. The new chassis is also key to improved stability, handling and enhanced durability.
High rider 2WD and 4WD models also feature completely redesigned front and rear suspension systems. The high mount double wishbone front suspension has been updated with a 20mm longer suspension rebound stroke compared to its predecessor as well as a larger stabiliser bar, ensuring better control on rough road surfaces.
The rear leaf spring setup has been retained but has been redesigned to reduce weight and ensure better ride quality. Improvements include updated rubber components and beefier shock absorbers. Thanks to the increased strength of each leaf spring a weight reduction was achieved without sacrificing suspension capability.
Legendary 4x4 status amplified
The Mitsubishi Triton has always been renowned for its off-road ability and key to this is the brand's proprietary Super Select 4WD system that was forged from successes at the legendary Dakar Rally.
Super Select 4WD-II is Mitsubishi Motors’ unique, cutting-edge 4WD technology that provides outstanding all-terrain performance both on-road and off-road. Drivers can choose from four different modes, selected via a dial selector to match the various road conditions. A unique feature is that 4H can be selected while driving at speeds of up to 100km/h.
2H is perfect for situations that require smooth handling and lower fuel consumption. 4H offers a confident drive both on and off road but the biggest benefit is on slippery surfaces such as gravel as the centre differential distributes driving force at a ratio of 40% to the front and 60% to the rear.
In 4HLc the Triton is in four-wheel drive and the centre diff is locked ensuring traction in rough conditions such as snow, sand and dirt.
4LLc or low range, four-wheel drive, with the centre diff locked ensures capability in unstable road conditions such as mud or uneven surfaces.
The Next-Gen Mitsubishi Triton is now fitted with seven drive modes with all-wheel control technologies, compared to the four modes that were previously offered. Each drive mode has been finely tuned through extensive testing to achieve outstanding driving performance for each type of road surface. Modes include Normal and Eco as well as Gravel and Snow when in 4H and Mud and Sand when in 4HLc and Rock in 4LLc.
Ready to work
Across the model range the Next-Gen Mitsubishi Triton strikes a great balance between lifestyle and commercial use, key to this is a larger load bin and a 3.5-ton towing capacity.
The cargo bed height has been lowered by 45mm to 820mm compared to the previous model and the upper surface area of the bumper corner has been enlarged and reinforced with a frame to be used as a foot hold for improved practicality.
Well-equipped model range
The Next-Gen Mitsubishi Triton is being launched with the widest range of models ever, with 11 derivatives which include 4x2 and 4x4 options as well as commercial focused variants and premium lifestyle editions, ensuring that there is a Triton for every need.

Interior comfort and convenience features include keyless entry, an eight-inch SDA, two-speakers, manual air-conditioning, a rear centre armrest, USB and accessory socket and a fabric seat material. Safety features include ABS and EBD, Isofix, a high-mounted stop lamp, immobiliser, central locking and a speed-sensing auto door lock.
The Mitsubishi Triton GLS 2WD auto adds to this specification with the addition of 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, a rear spoiler, front and rear LED fog lights and heated power folding mirrors. Interior specification is enhanced with the addition of cruise control, a keyless operating system, Bluetooth with hands-free voice control, a smartphone wireless charger, multiple USB charging outlets, six-speakers, electric windows, an electrically adjustable driver seat, automatic air conditioning, rear air circulator and leather seats.
