A media practitioner at heart

Kate Bauleth
My name is Kate Francineth Ninita Bauleth, a second-year journalism and media technology student at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust). This is a journey I have always wanted to embark on. Growing up, I’ve never really known anything besides media. When I was in primary school, I was always part of some form of art, starting off with Chi Namibia where we used to travel and do a lot of dances around the country and in Botswana.

While in primary school, I got the chance to start with my television career when I got to present on The Sunshine Club. This was one of the most amazing experiences. I had so much fun presenting this show. My segment for the show was a cooking segment. Learners from different schools would come to Silver Spoon Academy and face off in a cooking competition.

Thereafter, I joined my school editorial team where I got into the gist of writing, another unforgettable experience. I got to learn a lot about writing and in the 12th grade, I became the editor for the school newspaper. What an experience that was. I could say that this experience really shaped me into the writer I am today as I also write for the AfterBreak Teens Magazine.

My life as a student has been quite the experience. I have realised that it comes with so much prioritising; there is always a window created to make a decision. You constantly need to keep yourself motivated, especially with the course I am studying because it is only offered part-time, making it a little difficult to stay fully serious with this course. Everything nice usually happens after 17:00, which is the time we start with our classes. We’re constantly deciding whether to go grooving or sit down and stay in class.

However, I do not regret choosing this field of study as I am constantly learning something new and this just makes me super excited for the future. This course also makes my career options much broader, making it easier for me to branch out and spread my creative wings.
