DJ Thexa takes the industry by storm
Theron Herman, popularly known as DJ Thexa, is a rising star in the world of music production. He has taken the music industry by storm with his passion for creating captivating beats and promoting unique social events.
Thexa's journey has been testament to the power of dedication, creativity and the pursuit of one's dreams. From his humble beginnings during the 2020 lockdowns to collaborating with renowned artists and producers, he is also currently pursuing a marketing degree at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), where he is gaining valuable knowledge to complement his creative endeavours.
In addition, he is the founder of Groovecity, an exciting social event slated to take place on 5 August at Palm Tree Park in Windhoek. This is an event for the Namibian youth to come out and enjoy the sounds of live DJs and live life to the fullest.
Discovering a hidden talent
In 2020, during lockdown, Thexa took the opportunity to explore new avenues. He stumbled upon FL Studio, a popular music production software, while intending to download an e-learning application. This marked the beginning of his journey as a music producer.
While his career gained momentum in December of the same year, he had been perfecting his skills at a nearby venue, Club Chicola. DJ Tenpounds recognised his talent and consistently booked him for events, providing valuable exposure to live audiences.
A major breakthrough came when DJ Spuzza invited him to join the line-up for a special celebration of 'Don't Talk At The Party', a track that quickly got over 100 000 views in under 10 days. This performance catapulted Thexa into the spotlight and opened doors to exciting opportunities.
For him, the most fulfilling aspect of being a DJ is witnessing the crowd sing along to the songs he plays. It creates a powerful connection and sense of unity where music becomes the language that brings people together, he said. Moreover, he embraces the challenge of adapting to different equipment, ensuring seamless transitions and uninterrupted energy during performances.
Creativity as the signature
Creativity plays a pivotal role in Thexa's approach as a music producer and DJ. His unique style involves incorporating audio snippets from trending videos as acapellas and skillfully blending them with trendy tracks during his sets. This distinctive approach creates an engaging and memorable experience for the audience.
Overcoming challenges
As an emerging artist, Thexa said he has encountered the common speed bump of event organisers being reluctant to pay for performances initially. He quickly learnt that this is a typical part of the process for up-and-coming artists, but his determination to succeed keeps him pushing forward, knowing that each opportunity is a stepping stone toward a brighter future.
Vigilance and collaboration
Within the DJ community, Thexa emphasised the importance of vigilance to protect one's equipment during gigs. He also cherishes the value of collaboration, having worked with several talented artists and producers, including Kaytee, LVMU, SlayJ, DJ Castro, Toniii, GinoNa, WholesomeZhan, DJ Spuzza and Chester Houseprince.
Through these collaborations, he has learnt that creativity and effective marketing are essential to making an impact in the competitive music industry.
One of his ultimate dreams was to collaborate with DJ Spuzza, and that dream has now become a reality. Being featured as one of the producers on 'Don't Talk At The Party' has gathered a positive response from fans and the music community, elevating his status as a music producer, he said.
Advice to aspiring artists
Having experienced the challenges and triumphs of the music industry, Thexa offered valuable advice to aspiring artists. He stressed the importance of consistency, resilience and remaining focused on one's passion.
He further emphasised the significance of investing in yourself in order to make money.
"Be flexible. Flexible as in know when to stand your ground and know when to be humble," he said.
