Equipping learners to face lifelong challenges

No more than 20 students per class
Riverside Private School opened its doors ten years ago

Riverside Private School (RPS), situated in Swakopmund, has been providing education for five years now.

However, the school has been going on a lot longer than that, and it was initially called the Swakopmund School of Excellence, which was started in 2012. The school houses 20 teachers and 194 learners.

The current grade 11 students were the first grade one students in 2012. There were only 15 students at the time, and each year they added another grade, so the numbers have grown.

Currently, the school has two grade one classes and one grade two class; additionally, there will be two classes again next year and two grade three classes. From grades 4 to 11, there is only one class per grade.

When the school started, a room was rented as a classroom at Learning Right Kiddies Centre, but as the school needed two classrooms the following year, they had to find alternative premises.

A building on Offen Street was rented, which was perfect at the time. However, when the school ran out of space there, two mobile classrooms were put up. As the school grew, even those buildings were not enough, so they rented an empty property and put up four mobile containers to use as classrooms. Finally, when they could not accommodate their learners there anymore, they rented Pro-Ed‘s school buildings, where they are currently situated.

Ambition

RPS has dedicated, qualified and motivated teachers. The school believes in a holistic teaching approach. Not all children are academics, so some students need more guidance and support than others. Because their classes are small (no more than 20 students per class), the teachers can give individual help to students who are struggling. The school also offers chess from Grade 0 as part of its curriculum.

Mission and vision

RPS is dedicated to providing students with a stimulating atmosphere of learning and a solid foundation of skills, attitudes, and knowledge that will enable them to become competent, confident, and productive citizens.

The school aims to provide an excellent standard of education and to dedicate itself to producing leaders of the future.

Annual activities

The school will host its annual Spelling Bee and Read-a-thon at its Christmas Concert in November. A very special occasion planned for this year is hosting the very first valedictory service for the Grade 11s, also in November.

This year will also see the first Grade 11 examination.

A chess tournament will also take place later in the year involving all grades. Unfortunately, the school is unable to offer any sports as of yet as they do not have the facilities to do so.

Whenever they participate in a sports day, they have afternoon sessions at the local sports fields, where the children can practise for the upcoming event. Many of the students belong to various sports clubs in Swakopmund.
