Top-achieving learners rubbed shoulders with ministers and parliamentarians.
What was a dream for so many learners of Augustinium Secondary School and the Havana Project finally became a reality on 25 February, when learners met ministers and parliamentarians face-to-face.
Eiases Stephany, Ekandjo Elina, Uugwanga Rebecca, Katangolo Reinhold, Grace Ekandjo, Mwanyekele Johanna, Swartbooi Pharrell, Elungu Wilhelmina, Van Wyk Christine, Ndeulyatele Matheus, and Witbooi Ricky, who are all currently in grade 11 at Augustineum Secondary School, were given the rare opportunity to attend a parliamentary hearing. They were able to witness first-hand the inner workings of the Namibian parliament and engage in discussions with government officials about the education system in the country.
One of the most memorable moments of the visit was when the finance minister Ipumbu Shiimi presented the education budget to parliament. The learners gained a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in budgeting for a national institution and the importance of adequate funding for education.
The top achievers were also tasked with preparing speeches outlining their ideas for improving the education system in Namibia. This exercise challenged them to think critically about the issues facing the education sector and develop practical solutions. Elina Ekandjo reflected on the experience, noting that she had previously underestimated the hard work and dedication required of ministers and parliamentarians.
