Learners have ‘out-of-this-world’ planetary experience

Elizabeth Kheibes
Learners of MH Greeff Primary School in Windhoek yesterday had the opportunity to experience the solar system during a visit from the Africa Millimetre Telescope (AMT) mobile planetarium project.

The project sees an inflatable dome set up, with interactive images of the night sky projected inside.

Learners can see the earth, moon, sun and planets, but also zoom out to see other stars, galaxies and other interesting phenomena.

“As a science teacher myself, I was astonished to see things I taught laid out like that. I felt so proud to see the learners answer questions based on what they learnt, showing how well they know the work,” principal George Kandetu said.

According to the AMT team, the project has reached just under 30 schools so far, with support from Nedbank.

Nedbank has contributed N$150 000 over three years, starting this year.

Other sponsors include Fly Namibia and Gondwana Collections.
