Meet the DHPS Interact Club
The DHPS Interact Club is an extension of Windhoek Rotary, aimed at involving high school students in community service and leadership development. The club provides students with an opportunity to engage in meaningful activities that foster a sense of responsibility, teamwork and compassion.
It is run by Ms Bahcetepe and Mr Prey, two dedicated teachers at DHPS who guide and mentor the students. The club consists of approximately 30 active members, all of whom contribute their time and energy to making a positive impact on the community.
Since the Interact Club was first established, it has built strong connections and alliances, allowing it to operate effectively. It receives financial support from both the Windhoek Rotary Club and the school board, ensuring that funds are available for various projects. This funding is managed carefully and is allocated based on the club’s needs, with a significant portion going toward one of its most impactful initiatives - the monthly soup kitchen.
The soup kitchen takes place on a Sunday morning once a month in Ombili, Windhoek. Here, students prepare and serve meals to children in need, ensuring they receive a warm, nutritious meal.
However, the initiative goes beyond just providing food; the club members also engage the children in a variety of fun and educational activities. These include reading, dancing and playing soccer, helping to create a supportive and joyful environment where the children feel valued and cared for.
Within the Interact Club, there is a designated team responsible for organising these activities. Their role includes planning events, managing logistics, and ensuring the smooth execution of each initiative.
This hands-on involvement allows students to take on leadership roles, improve their organisational skills, and learn about the importance of community service. It also fosters a sense of teamwork and responsibility, as students work together toward a common goal.
One of the club’s long-term objectives is to inspire students to continue serving their communities beyond high school. By actively participating in service projects, students develop a deeper understanding of social issues and are encouraged to join a Rotary Club in their adult lives. This ensures that the values of compassion, leadership and service remain a part of their personal and professional journeys.
The most recent soup kitchen took place on Sunday, 16 March and provided another opportunity for students to make a difference in their community.
