Seven years ago, Immanuel Ndakondja Katali, a qualified environmental assessment practitioner, founded INK Enviro Consultants as an independent environmental consulting company.

"Our primary focus is in the environmental management industry, providing project-based environmental management services in the key areas of environmental impact assessments, environmental compliance auditing, environmental monitoring and support services," says Katali.

Additionally, the organisation recently introduced a new health and safety service that focuses on health and safety management systems, inspection audits, training and awareness, and incident investigations within various organisations.

According to Katali, their biggest clientele are the mining and energy sectors.

"We further recently started providing environmental services in the booming energy sector, which strongly supports the Harambee Prosperity Plan II, which aims to increase local electricity generation capacity in the country by 2025," he says.

"One of the major challenges in the industry is the lack of understanding in society of the importance of environmental sustainability. Many clients request our services to obtain an environmental clearance certificate (ECC) in order for the construction of their project to commence as soon as possible," says Katali.

Importance of industry experts

Johann Venter, the environmental, health and safety consultant of INK Enviro Consultants, describes his role as focusing on a project’s health and safety components.

Venter joined the team in May.

He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration as well as an LLB degree, amongst other diplomas.

"My working career spanned from the fire engineering field to that of environmental, health and safety related positions. I am also a trained incident investigator and have conducted many investigations in order to determine the root cause of a loss-producing event, which has as its main objective to prevent it from recurring again," Venter says.

He urged industry experts in the health and safety environment not to remain stagnant.

"There are always new opportunities to meet people from all walks of life and to learn new things. Using my expertise to help organisations and individuals improve is something I always look forward to," he says.

Never give up

Phillipus Shaun Augustus, the environmental field technician, also joined the team in May this year.

He is responsible for the fieldwork that involves taking samples, making site observations, performing assessments, and facilitating public engagements.

"I came to take up a new experience in public and key stakeholder engagements, which INK is often required to conduct as part of the Environmental Management Act and its regulations," he says.

"The exciting part about this new position is the new experience of being involved in an environment that is not particularly a mining environment, and the most challenging aspect about this position is providing an understanding of a new project to the community," he says.

Augustus advises others in the field to always remain positive and focused on their goal. "You should always set targets for yourself and ensure that you do whatever it takes to reach these targets. Never give up and always develop a passion for what you do."
