TransNamib's newest internal auditor Abel Abel hails from Otjiwarongo.

His academic achievements range from a Master's in international relations to a postgraduate diploma in internal auditing and a bachelor of accounting sciences degree. He also holds the professional designation of certified internal auditor as well as certification in risk management assurance.

Abel said in addition to his job as an internal auditor at TransNamib, he serves on regional council audit committees with the permission of TransNamib, and volunteers as a member of the Chevening alumni network Namibia.

On the job

“As an auditor and leader in my own right, my work does not begin or end with the start or end of the workday, as I am constantly reflecting on information obtained from the environment and relating it to TransNamib.

"I also make a concerted effort to network with colleagues and share insights," he said.

Abel's journey with TransNamib began as an applicant on 23 June 2022, and officially as a team member on 1 November 2022.

“My objective is to assist management in identifying and implementing effective and efficient governance, risk and control processes," he said.

Abel described his typical day at work: He arrives at the office at 08:00, makes a cup of coffee, checks his Outlook calendar for the day's agenda and follows up on any outstanding matters. He then resumes his audit fieldwork or any other ongoing work by reviewing processes and compiling findings, all while encouraging positive working relationships and a positive mindset.

“It gives me great pleasure to serve as the guardian of governance at TransNamib, which is a vital asset in the Namibian House.”

Unconventional

Adapting to a working style entails your approach to handling your professional responsibilities on a daily basis; this is a strategy that everyone requires in order to make the job manageable.

Abel said he employs unconventional approaches to internal auditing through extensive engagement and collaboration, as well as a positive attitude, with the goal of understanding the issues and seeking common solutions to achieve the company's goals.

He emphasised that, regardless of the daunting and complex organisational dynamics, this teaches him to be resilient in the face of these challenges and to keep his focus on the goal.
