Charting success in finance
Determined to learn and grow
Hailing from Oshakati with an interest in financial services, Justine Domingues is ready to take on her role as a finance manager at Old Mutual.
Justine Domingues says she always had her eye on being a meaningful contributor to the world of finance, so she pursued a career in the field.
She is a registered chartered accountant (CA) who completed both her bachelor of accounting and postgraduate diploma in accounting science at the University of Johannesburg.
She recently completed her articles at Deloitte with experience in the financial services industry.
With her new appointed at Old Mutual, Domingues is determined to grow her career and gain experience while working with some of the most knowledgeable people in the industry, both in her professional and personal capacity.
The finance manager says she cannot resist a challenge. “I have always enjoyed being a problem solver. Having the opportunity to apply that to a real-world context while also being impactful drew me to this career,” she said.
Challenges
While the CA journey alone has been one of her biggest challenges, she says the profession demands continuous growth, persistence and perseverance. Having achieved the CA designation does not signify the end of her journey.
“It is the most rewarding journey, and I am grateful that I have allowed it to shape me into the professional I am today and will continue to become as I grow,” she said.
She says the highlight of her career is being a part of a team that delivers quality information to its stakeholders, who are considered their investors and deserve the best.
Career lessons
One of the lessons she has learned while navigating her career is that every day is different.
“Every day I get up for work is a day to learn a new thing and to be open to new ways of getting things done.”
Her future and progress within Old Mutual begin with the short-term plans she has established. “I aim to become the best person in my current role and, in the long term, to advance as I become more knowledgeable and experienced,” she said.
Advice
Domingues believes that the work one puts into any position does not start when you apply for the position; it starts with what you do in your life every day, whether you are at the beginning of the process or just about to finish it. Give it your very best, whether someone is watching or not, she says.
She lives by the quote: "The only time you fail is when you fall down and stay down" by Stephen Richards. In her free time, Domingues enjoys playing the guitar.
