Assisting towards developing the Government Institutions Pension Fund’s (GIPF) digital platforms, Kondjeni Ndakeva, a developer at GIPF, describes his journey at the fund in one word: “intriguing”.

Ndakeva’s role at GIPF is to assist in the development process of the company’s website, member and staff online self-service portals, intranet portals, and other digital applications within the organisation. In line with the fund’s goal of being a leading and model pension fund globally, GIPF has capacitated its information systems department.

“I am fortunate to be a part of such a vibrant and competent team. I learn something new every day from my fellow colleagues and the daily challenges are always lessons,” Ndakeva said.

He started his educational journey at Okapombo primary school in the Ohangwena Region and completed his primary education at Namutoni Primary School in Windhoek. He continued his journey with his secondary school education at Immanuel Shifidi High School. Then he enrolled for his bachelor’s degree at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), where he obtained a national diploma in information technology (IT), a bachelor’s degree in software engineering and an honours degree in computer informatics. “I’m a firm believer that one is never done learning in life, hence why I’m currently enrolled for a master’s degree in data science at NUST”.

He never imagined this career path for himself. “I was so passionate about engineering, and if I had qualified for that course, my life would have panned out differently. What a blessing in disguise it has been as it becomes evident daily that a career in IT is my true calling.”

One of the greatest lessons learned in his career has been to constantly learn from work experiences.

Among the lessons learned, is the need for teamwork, to reach out for help when struggling and stressed, and how important it is to be patient and improve communication skills. Lastly, Ndakeva feels the IT profession has a lot to offer when it comes to gaining knowledge and improving personal skill sets, and stressed that the career is versatile, dynamic and rewarding. Ndakeva encourages aspiring IT specialists to be passionate about their trade as it will be the fire that drives them to fully enjoy and execute their duties to the best of their abilities.
