The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) recently announced the appointment of Maria Moses as its finance and administration executiveAppointed on 3 July, Moses said the atmosphere at CRAN has made it very easy to transition from her previous employment. "I am excited and look forward to the challenges that this position will bring," she said.As the executive for finance and administration, Moses is responsible for strategically planning, directing, managing and coordinating all the functions under the finance and administration department. Additionally, she is responsible for ensuring alignment with the authority’s strategic plan.Moses holds a master's degree in international business, a bachelor of technology degree in accounting and finance and a national diploma in accounting. She obtained professional certificates in business accounting; telecommunications policy, regulation and management (TPRM); project management, and management development. A new roleWhile her position contributes to the development of CRAN’s strategic and annual plans, it has a special focus on financial forecasting, budgeting and financial control system development. Moses oversees the overall strategic and operational planning and implementation of the procurement and corporate administration objectives. Ensuring that the finance and administration department has adequate resources, appropriate systems and policies that guide operational efficiency and effectiveness to ensure compliance to legal and regulatory requirements form part of her duties in this role.She said financial sustainability and operational efficiency are her key focus areas and the role is critical in providing the necessary support in ensuring that the organisation achieves its strategic objective. Unique and enjoyableThe dynamic nature of her new role makes it unique and enjoyable. It entails financial accounting, management accounting, procurement and contracts management, and corporate administration. “Because the job covers such a large scope of work, I find that this makes it more mentally stimulating,” she said.Moses remains inspired to continue building her career in the information and communication technology (ICT) industry due to her fascination on how it works to bring a revolution to daily life. “My passion was strengthened when I received the opportunity to join the ICT industry in 2013. Since then, I completed a certificate in TPRM, which has reinforced my enthusiasm for ICT."She shared some career lessons gained throughout her work experience, saying: "Nothing comes easy in life. If you have a vision, it is possible to achieve it with hard work, dedication, patience and, most importantly, faith. In my career journey, I found that self-discipline allowed me to grow in my career". Empowering her teamMoses said she has not experienced any definitive challenges in her position yet, but added that she believes they are a way to shape and allow individuals to think outside the box. “Challenges bring out the creativity that is embedded within us. I am looking forward to tackling all challenges that may come my way. I believe that with teamwork, understanding, patience and perseverance, as a department and an organisation as a whole, we shall overcome all challenges that may come our way,” she said. Her executive role allows her to empower the team to ensure good quality of work. She said providing leadership and ensuring proper allocation of resources enables the team to effectively perform their tasks. Additionally, she realised that by creating an environment that allows open communication, and by leading by example, the quality of work put out by the team is guaranteed to be great. About me:1.
