Managing your career
Guiding Graduates
The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation in Namibia recently held a fellows career circle event at Protea Hotel in Windhoek that focused on guiding the graduate fellows on managing their careers and striving in the corporate world.
The purpose of this event was to encourage fellows to continue growing and striving for opportunities in the corporate world, to overcome challenges and to continue making an impact in the world out there.
The guest speaker at the event was Fenni Nghikevali, a qualified chartered accountant and registered auditor, who gave the keynote address.
Nghikevali is an executive at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (ICAN), where she is currently involved in the professional development of newly qualified chartered accountants and auditors.
In her address, she encouraged the fellows to own their careers and control their futures by being flexible and open to new opportunities for growth. She further explained that there’s more to just a career and one needs to always be open to changes and new opportunities in the world out there.
She encouraged the fellows to build their social and professional networks, build personal brands and accommodate growth.
She further explained the importance of having a personal brand and how that influences the opportunities one comes across. She also encouraged the fellows to step out of their comfort zones to hunt for new opportunities, market themselves and get their voices heard.
Nghikevali emphasised the importance of taking on new opportunities, celebrating achievements and deepening relationships with people.
Drawing from her own experiences, she encouraged fellows to be open to new opportunities and changes and urged that they should not be limited. She narrated how she transitioned from finance and auditing roles to managing and developing people as part of her passion and how that has given her much success in her career journey.
In her final remarks, Nghikevali encouraged the fellows to show up, speak up, be confident and do their best in their work.
