From intern to interactive designer
Morgan Dumeni shares his story of how an internship turned into an opportunity to be permanently employed after obtaining his degree.
Morgan Dumeni is another testament of how important it is to take advantage of an internship. The interactive designer was permanently employed at Namibia Media Holdings' (NMH) marketing division, Synergi, after completing his internship at the same company and obtaining his degree in new media design at the College of the Arts in 2023.
“At first, my main reason for applying at NMH was to complete my final year in new media design for the sake of completing my year-end internship,” he said.
Dumeni’s degree focuses on specific disciplines such as graphic design, web design and photography. Although it all started as a means to an end, he said he has grown to love his job as the company continuously challenges him and pushes him to explore his creativity even more.
The designer said his tasks at Synergi include, but are not limited to, creating various designs for marketing purposes, animating designs for the sake of achieving applied motion graphics to capture the attention of the specific target audience. Before finding his feet at NMH, Dumeni gained experience doing a six-month internship at a small company called Muhoko Investments.
It's no secret that the young designer has many creative avenues such as designing posters, flyers, logos and album covers while dabbling in art photography and social media management as well.
Dumeni said he intends to use his talents and passions to their full capacity to make a success of his new position. Besides being a designer, he is also a fitness enthusiast and spent most of 2023 at a gym as a fitness instructor.
If there is one thing that can be taken from Dumeni’s journey from student to graduate to full-time employee, it's that the best thing one can do is take advantage of every internship opportunity and maximise it.
