The Namibia Chess Federation hosted their Zone 3 chess championship on 19 February

Under the auspices of the Namibia Chess Federation, Zone 3 (Comprising of Windhoek, Okahandja, Rehoboth and Gobabis) has the honour of inviting all scholars to participate in the 2022 Zone 3 Schools Individual Chess Championship (ZSICC).

The Championship was held in Windhoek on 19 February 2022 at Dawid Bezuidenhout Secondary School. In accordance with regulations, the following age groups participated in seven rounds of chess: Under 7 – players born on or after January 1, 2015, Under 9 – players born on or after January 1, 2013, Under 11 – players born on or after January 1, 2011, Under 13 – players born on or after January 1, 2009, Under 15 – players born on or after January 1, 2007, Under 17 – players born on or after January 1, 2005 and under 19 – players born on or after January 1, 2003.

The championship was attended by all players from Namibian government schools, private schools and home-schooling individuals and groups.

The aim of this championship is to have players play amongst their peers and to qualify as junior players to play in the nationals, so once players are able to make it to the top five, they automatically qualify to play in the African Schools Individual Chess Championship in Monrovia, the capital city of the West African country of Liberia. Players could also go to the world championship in Panama City.

In the past few years, the players haven’t had a proper opportunity to play chess. “As you can see by the presence of so many parents here, the people have a very good time playing chess but due to Covid-19 a lot of kids did not play chess that much, so they are returning after a long layoff and we are all excited,” said Charles Eichab, the president of the Namibia Chess Federation.
