911 Turbo clocks 1.1 million km
Porsche owner still drives his 41-year-old car daily.
Yochanaan Coetzee - Many Porsche owners only break out their babies when they’re hitting a track day or when their midlife crisis starts acting up.
Not Canadian Bill MacEachern.
Since he bought his 1975 Porsche 911 Turbo in May 1976, he’s criss-crossed the North American continent, raced it at every chance he gets and has put over 1.165 million kms on the clock of his beloved daily driver.
Unsuprisingly, after taking delivery of his German sports car, he developed a love for racing and was attending races in Florida, Georgia, New England, California and everywhere else in between.
Over the 30 years that followed, MacEachern drove the 911 Turbo on a daily basis and racked up over 850 000 km by 2009, before being involved in an accident, which resulted in extensive damage to the axle shaft, suspension arm and fender. Not one to let the incident stand in the way of his adventures, he immediately had the car repaired and continued to finish the 30-hour drive to Monterey he was on.
Thirteen years later, in 2012, it reached the milestone of 1,000,000 km on the clock and this moment capped off over 40 years of love, devotion and adventure shared between a man and his machine.
Speaking to 911 Magazine, MacEachern was quoted as stating: “The car clicked over its one millionth kilometre on the way to the famous swap meet in Hershey, Pennsylvania and we had a little celebration with champagne toasts when I got back to Toronto.”
Now, with 725,000 miles (1,165,937 km) to its name, MacEachern says he still gets a massive thrill driving it.
“The 930 was just such an amazing watershed machine. Porsche Turbos have set new standards of excellence as both racing machines and high-performance road machines. And they’re still a one-of-a-kind thrill to own and drive today,” he says.
Could this be the world’s most-travelled privately-owned Porsche?
