Many Namibians and the national Olympics committee took to social media to congratulate rower Maike Diekmann for finishing in the top 20 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Diekmann marked her final session of the women's single sculls C final with a sixth place finish out of six rowers, clocking 7:52.17 on Friday morning. The result meant she finishes 18th overall in an event of 32 rowers.

Tatsiana Klimovic of Belarus won the race (7:39.53), followed by Lovisa Claeson of Sweden (7:41.07), while Serbia's Jovana Arsic came in third (7:43.30).

“Olympic Rower Maike Diekmann placed 18th out of 32 rowers in the women’s single Sculls event in Tokyo. Well done Maike, you make us proud!” the Olympics committee posted on Facebook.

Diekmann had gone into the race hoping to finish 13th, which was her potential highest place - but lacked the same amount of energy she had during the competition.

Many Namibians still felt that the rower did her best in an event full of talented athletes.

‘Amazing to watch’

Finishing in the top 20 and also qualifying to the Olympics is said to have been a success for the rower.

“Sixth place, we are still proud of you. Next Olympics, try my people from Zambezi and the two Kavango regions. Mutete gives them wings… I bet they only need skills and tactics and the rest will be history,” Certified Nyemba wrote.

Veteran cyclist Tokkie Bombosch also congratulated the athlete.

“It was amazing to watch and great comments from the commentators. Well done,” he said.
