Perfecting and expanding the capabilities of their 250kW motor extruder has allowed Namib Mills to add colour and flavour to their instant porridge range.

Namib Mills is a leader in the supply of staple food in Namibia for a reason. With the launch of their new range of packaging for their boundary-breaking Top Score Instant maize porridge productions last week, the company has again demonstrated how innovation, thoughtful product development and sheer determination can put Namibian enterprise at the very forefront of the market.
Namib Mills’ manager of operations Elfrieda Roos exudes the commitment and enthusiasm needed to compete in today’s unpredictable economic environment, and eagerly elaborates on the process leading up to the new offering.
She says after the launch of the Top Score Instant line on 1 March 2018, the easy-to-prepare vitamin-fortified energy source has grown in variety as it has grown in popularity.
Perfecting and expanding the capabilities of their 250kW motor extruder has allowed Namib Mills to add colour and flavour to their instant porridge range. Starting with only the original flavour, banana and vanilla, the range has been expanded with additions of strawberry in 2019, toffee caramel in 2020 and mango and peanut butter later that year.
However, by July 2019, they started seriously looking at the shortcomings of the product, and found that the packaging made it difficult to open, difficult to reseal, prone to breaking and unstable on shop shelves.
“Namibia is in Top Score Instant. The packaging was not representative. We wanted the same quality outside that we provide inside,” Ross explained.

In November 2019, Namib Mills ordered a state-of-the-art N$8 million R700 weighing and packaging machine from MBP in Italy. “It is a fast machine, capable of packing 55 to 110, 500 gram packets a minute,” says Roos. However, the Covid-19 outbreak intervened and the Italian factory was forced to shut down three times before the order could be completed.
Eventually, the machine was delivered in Otavi in April 2021 and technicians from Italy have installed it. Now the quad-seal bags with their broad, steady bases - made from packaging material sourced from South Africa - ensure convenient and attractive storage for Top Score Instant that is also exported to that neighbouring market.
Top Score Instant maize porridge is a high-energy product made from 99% natural ingredients and fortified with vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B6 and minerals including folic acid, iron and zinc. It is low in fat and gluten-free, as well as quick and easy to prepare: Just add hot water or milk, stir and enjoy.
