PULL QOUTE: “The journey has only begun but I will not be surprised should I encounter a few hurdles along the way because great things do not come easy.’’
Hailing from Swakopmund where she was born and raised, Linea Awala attended the Atlantic Junior Secondary School and finished her grade 11 and grade 12 at Namib High School.
Awala spent her afternoons at a program called Mondesa Youth Opportunities (MYO). The program selected the top performing learners form different primary schools and she was one of the chosen ones.
“One of my favourite memories is the day that I graduated from pre-school, when I was asked to present a brief speech and prayer to my fellow classmates as well as parents. This memory is as clear as day because it marked the beginning of great things,’’ she said.
She was part of the regional top 10 performers for the Junior Secondary Certificate (JSC) results.
Awala picked the fresh fruit of her hardworking labour and today she is a third year chartered accountant student as well as the newly elected secretary of academic affairs at the University of Namibia (Unam) accounting society.
In this position, she looks forward to meeting different people and learning from them. Awala is always happy to learn new things.
Awala urged young individuals to live their dream and not someone else’s dream, “Have goals or an idea of what you want for yourself. Take it upon yourself to take charge of your own life and do not be afraid of taking on new challenges. When it comes to work or school, do your outmost best, it will pay off in the long run,” she said.
She is realistic about what could lie ahead.
“The journey has only begun but I will not be surprised should I encounter a few hurdles along the way because great things do not come easy.’’
Mental preparation is key, she said. In preparing to tackle the new challenges and work load, she acknowledged that she is taking on a new challenge and that her schedule will have to change.
She added: “The Man above is practically my best friend, I know that this is exactly where He wants me to be in preparation for a much greater plan”
Being part of ICAN presents new opportunities.
“What’s most exciting about being part of the ICAN group, is working with a group of brilliant individuals who come from different backgrounds, yet all have the same goal which is to educate and empower the youth,” Awala said.
One of the challenging aspects of her job is having many great ideas and sometimes not having the means to turn all of them into actual plans due to the fact that a lot of projects come with limited resources.
Over the next five years, the self-motivated Awala sees herself becoming a qualified chartered accountant (CA). She also sees herself being an academic, considering her love of education.
