The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform handed over farming equipment and the new refurbished hostel and kitchen at the Mashare Agricultural Development Institute (MADI) in the Kavango East Region.

The farming equipment includes 12 tractors and rippers including a solar plant and a drip irrigation system which were financed through the Green Climate Fund (GCF) being administered by the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia (EIF).

The hand-over forms part of the Climate Resilient Agriculture in three vulnerable extreme northern crop-growing regions (CRAVE) projects under the EIF.

Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, Calle Schlettwein in a speech read on his behalf said the project is aimed at reducing rural human population’s vulnerability and food insecurity occasioned by climate change while increasing the adaptive capacity, well-being and resilience of vulnerable small-scale farming communities in crop-producing landscapes threatened by climate change.

He said the project is built on the government’s strong baseline investment made in light of the Namibia Comprehensive Conservation Agriculture Programme (NCCAO) and revised Namibia Agriculture Policy of 2015.

“Amid challenges experienced in project implementation, significant interventions were observed in the region, including the upgraded and refurbishment of the kitchen and hostel here at MADI, Procurement of Tractors and Rippers, installation of Solar Energy Technologies and Irrigations systems in the region,’ said Schleittwein.

The five-year project is funded by GCF through the EIF to the tune of US dollars 9.5 million with the Namibian government contributing US dollars 500 000, amounting to about N$ 140 million.

The governor of Kavango East Region, Bonifasius Wakudumo, in his welcoming remarks said with the handing over of equipment and refurbished kitchen and hostel, the regional leadership would like to see the centre regaining its position as a centre of excellence that will support the transformation of the region from the poorest region in the country to a fully agricultural production region. - Nampa
