Lessons at Jan Möhr Secondary School in Windhoek were disrupted last week after learners staged a protest demanding the arrest of a 53-year-old male teacher who allegedly sodomised a 19-year-old pupil and a minor at the school premises.
This was not an isolated case, however.
The same teacher was accused in August 2013 of sodomising a 17-year-old pupil at the school and was suspended from the hostel.
According to an article published by The Namibian newspaper on 15 August 2013, the pupil’s father felt he not press charges because he belonged to the same political party as the teacher.
“It was in that same year again that a parent went to the hostel and lashed out at the accused teacher, saying he (the teacher) should stop calling her son to his room and giving him all kinds of chores,” the article states.
The recent event
The public lashed out on social media with all sorts of comments demanding the arrest of the accused teacher and questioning the school management for allowing him to continue teaching.
The accused made his first court appearance yesterday in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court and he was denied bail on the grounds that he might interfere with police investigations as the court still needs to obtain seven other statements.
The accused teacher faces two counts of rape, one which involves a minor.
The case was postponed to 5 March 2021 for further police investigation and for the suspect to secure legal representation.
The suspect ,who is a well-known mathematics teacher in Windhoek, said he had a problem with the bail conditions because he was no longer a teacher and would not be in a position to interfere with learners.
“I resigned on Friday, 5 February 2021 and I also want to let the court know that through my lawyer we will have a counter-charge because we think it is a plot,” he said.
Statement by the school management
The management of the school released a press statement acknowledging the incident, saying that no matter the circumstances, it cannot be justified in any manner as any school premises should be a place of safety for learners.
They also stated that they have taken the affected learner to a medical facility for tests and will later forward the tests to the police to assist with investigations.
They also confirmed that a case was opened against the suspected teacher and that the suspected teacher tendered his resignation on Friday, 5 February 2021, before his arrest.
They are also encouraging learners or anyone with credible information to contact the school principal or the police to report these matters for appropriate action to be taken against the accused.
