STAFF REPORTER - Plastic Packaging has won the 2021 Southern Africa Regional Exporters Award, organised by the USAid Southern African Trade and Investment Hub and coordinated by the Eastern Cape Development Corporation.

The Namibian company’s latest achievement follows after recently scooping up the Namibia Manufacturers Association (NMA) award for Corporate Manufacturer of the Year 2021.

Celebrating excellence among exporter firms, the Trade Hub of the United States Agency for International Development (USAid) last week brought together all the Exporter of the Year winners from eight countries to compete in the Regional Exporter Awards. As such, winning firms from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia competed against Plastic Packaging from Namibia for the overall winner of the Southern Africa Exporter Awards in various categories.

The USAid Trade Hub actively engaged with countries in Southern Africa to increase sustainable growth, export competitiveness and trade within these countries.

The judging panel at the awards comprised of experts with international business experience drawn from the private and public sectors. The event’s bedrock foundation was the realisation that Africa’s economic success and growth does not rest in individuals but in collaborative efforts and working together through exporting.

The criteria for the award were to find a company with the following trademarks: a degree of innovation, an international marketing strategy, strategic business practices and future planning and great financial performance.

The relationship between export and economic growth is gaining momentum with methods being administered that prove how countries accelerate economic growth through increase in exports. It is aimed at recognising companies that have thrived and that have helped other companies prosper in exports despite challenges and hardships like the Covid-19 pandemic.

Plastic Packaging CEO Nico du Plessis in his acceptance speech said the company was privileged to receive such a prestigious award and to represent Namibia in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

OTHER AWARDS

Apart from winning the NMA award for Corporate Manufacturer of the Year 2021, Plastic Packaging also won the NMA’s silver award for Most Environmentally Friendly Manufacturer.

Its subsidiary companies in Okahandja, Namibia Polymer Recyclers, won gold for Medium Manufacturer of the Year and pipe manufacturing company, Namibia Plastic Converters, bronze for Large Manufacturer of the Year.

The NMA believes that by honouring and recognising its members through this national annual event, it will inspire and motivate its members to increase the awareness of the high standard of manufacturing in Namibia and the important role which the sector is playing in wealth and job creation in the country and the rest of SADC.

Plastic Packaging specialises in the manufacturing of flexible film and provides complete packaging solutions to all market segments both in Namibia, Angola, and South Africa. It has 3 manufacturing plants and eight branches in Namibia, one manufacturing plant and three branches in Angola and two branches in South Africa, servicing the Northern-Cape, Western-Cape and North-West Province.

SUSTAINABLE

Plastic Packaging prides themselves in being a sustainable manufacturer by recycling approximately 200 tons of Namibia plastic waste per month and turning it into second life-cycle products, thus completing the circular economy of plastics in Namibia.

Second-life-cycle products such as irrigation pipes, black builders sheeting, plant bags, DIY sheeting and plastic shopping carrier bags are all manufactured by them with Namibian plastic recycled material. This includes is the well-known STAR refuse bags that are available at most leading retail outlets.

All the Plastic Packaging manufacturing plants in Namibia have solar panels on the roofs and at their recycling facility, Namibia Polymer Recyclers in Okahandja, all water used during the recycling process is repurposed by watering more than 100 citrus trees and spekboom plants on the premises.

The group’s celebration will continue in 2022 when Plastic Packaging will be celebrating their 40th year as a manufacturer in Namibia.
