Bank Windhoek Socratic Forum
The next meeting of the Bank Windhoek Socratic Forum takes place on 17 April 2018 at Safari Hotel Namib 2 at 18:00. The topic of the meeting is Humiliation as a pathway to knowing our boundaries and will be introduced by Joan Guriras.

Joan Guriras has worked in the business environment for well over 40 years and has during this period not only become known as a strong communicator with effective internal and external communication strategies and creative marketing and managerial skills, but also as a highly motivated, accomplished and driven professional with a track record of a proven ability to contribute to and add value to the strategic and operational strategies of organisations.
Her employment history commenced in 1961 as an Assistant-Buyer of junior dresses, coats and suits of the Plymouth Shops 176 Retail Chain on the east coast of the United States of America and she obtained a Degree in Merchandise and Marketing from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1964. She advanced to serve as Vice-President of Divisional Merchandise and Manager of the Ready-to-Wear division of the Plymouth Shops from 1977-1984 and as Executive Vice-President and General Merchandise Manager from 1984-1989.
Joan moved to Namibia in 1990 where she served as the Account Executive of the LINTAS: Namibia Advertising Agency from 1993-1995. She became the owner of the company in 1995 and until 2009 developed communication strategies for companies such as FNB, Bank Windhoek, Coca Cola, Metropolitan, Air Namibia, TransNamib and Microsoft that exist to this day. She has also been the owner of the Sterling Short-term Insurance Company from 2004-2006.
She served as the President of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1994-2002 and successfully implemented a unification strategy for the new government by bringing existing chambers, dived along racial and tribal lines, under one umbrella guided by one constitution. She is also a Founding Member of President's Advisory Council and a Red Cross Goodwill Ambassador.
Joan formerly served on the Boards of Sea Harvest, I&J Fishing, the Development Bank of Namibia, the UNICEF Child Survival, Protection and Development Programme and as Chairperson of National Theatre of Namibia and currently as the Chairperson of Methealth Namibia Administrators and the Metropolitan Pinnacle Trust.
Humiliation as a pathway to knowing our boundaries
Boundaries help us determine who is responsible for what and to identify where one person begins and the other ends. They assist us in defining and understanding the source and ownership of a problem or a situation and in eventually finding solutions and setting changes in motion.
Being oblivious of boundaries may result in a myriad of negative responses such as humiliation and not accepting some responsibility for the situation and abusive situations are therefore most probable to occur in and are likely to be sustained in a scenario of no-boundaries.
There is freedom in establishing boundaries.
