Bank Windhoek is proud to announce that it will once again support the ATKV (Afrikaanse Taal-en Kultuurvereniging/Afrikaans Language and Culture Association) Pluimpie Awards. This year will be the 21st time that the awards will be hosted in Namibia.

The Pluimpie Awards Ceremony will take place on 30 June 2017 with the aim of honouring individuals, institutions, publishers and companies who have made a special contribution towards the Afrikaans language for their efforts to keep the language modern and fashionable.

Various awards such as Pluimpies, Donsies and Veertjies will be handed over to contestants according to the different categories. The highest special award will be the Afrikoon.

“Afrikaans is such a vibrant language and therefore we want to support and award those who invest in the development of the language. This year we will once again honour contributions in the categories of drama, poetry, literature, lyrics, newspapers, broadcasts and publications,” said Leoni van Rensburg, Chairperson of the ATKV in Namibia.

“Speakers of African languages, including Afrikaans, realise the need to develop their languages. It is the responsibility of every Namibian and African to make sure their respective languages do not become extinct. Through the Pluimpie Awards we encourage the use of Afrikaans and aim to promote the language among young Namibians,” concluded Van Rensburg.

“At Bank Windhoek we celebrate culture and diversity. Languages, and more specific indigenous languages, form part of our nation's culture. To celebrate our culture, we need to celebrate and preserve our languages and awards, such as the Pluimpie Awards, do just this. Competitions like this do not only keep an indigenous language alive, but it promotes the art of writing in various genres. At Bank Windhoek we strongly believe that art can be a way to create employment and to generate an income and this can help to alleviate unemployment and poverty. Therefore we are proud to be a sponsor of this writing competition,” said Riaan van Rooyen, Head Corporate Affairs, Strategy and Sustainability.
