Over 70 wrestlers from three clubs took part in the Swakop Atlantic Wrestling Championships on Saturday, with Devin Benhard named as the wrestler of the tournament.
Male and female wrestlers from under-nine to senior level participated in the tournament according to their weight group.
Benhard won first place in his weight group in the senior and junior freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines.
“It feels very good to be selected as the wrestler of the tournament because to be the wrestler of the day, you have to put in hard work and train very hard daily. It feels great to be a champ,” he said.
He advised other wrestlers to keep training, never lose hope and keep working hard.
“It is not easy to be a champ. You have to work hard,” he added.
The wrestler has hopes of representing Namibia at the Commonwealth Games slated for London next year.
“I believe that I will make it to the Games because I work hard and I am dedicated and I love the sport,” he said.
Gabriel Gurirab, the organiser of the event and the vice-president of the Namibia Wrestling Federation, said it was challenging to host the event but the level of competition was commendable.
