BMX youth national finals approaches
Great excitement is in the air as young BMX cyclists from seven regions will gather in Windhoek to participate in the Namibia Cycling Federation (NCF) second BMX regional centres national finals on 9 September.
The event forms part of the NCF's Kids on Bikes project. Some 80 children between the ages of 6 and 16 will be participating, with each of the ten BMX centres entering a team of ten riders and two coaches.
The BMX centres are located in the Oshikoto, Omusati, Kavango East, Omaheke, Erongo and Otjozundjupa regions, as well as three BMX groups in Windhoek.
The national finals will be run in standard BMX format – participation motos, qualifiers and finals in which medals are up for grabs. It is being presented as a stand-alone NCF event within the context of Namibia Media Holding's Hashtag Festival. The #Festival will bring together school-goers (17 and under) from several regions to benefit from a career exhibition, and to take part in a variety of short-format community games/sports.
The NCF's Kids on Bikes project forms part of the NCF's Regional Expansion cycling programme, which was launched in 2015. It is envisaged by the NCF and lead sponsor RMB Namibia, to have established at least one bike centre in each region by 2020.
The finals, and the entire Kids on Bikes programme is made possible by lead sponsorship from RMB Namibia, through the FNB Foundation Trust, together with supporting sponsors such as Raceday.events, Rock & Rut mountain bike club and Mannie's Bike Mecca.
Other supporters during the 2017 series, which comprised five BMX events outside Windhoek as well as northern and central regions events, included Food Lovers' Market, Pupkewitz Megabuild and Marathon Sugar.
The BMX centres are generally operated under NCF guidance by community-based NGOs whose objective is youth development – usually 5-16 year olds – through cycling as sport and recreation.
On Saturday morning, the NCF will also be hosting a short format mountain biking event for wild-card selected #Festival children in and around the SKW fields. The event is sponsored by NMH and Mannie's Bike Mecca.
