Calendar of Events hosted by Scientific Society
The Scientific Society of Namibia has announced its upcoming calendar of events for November and December.
Thursday, 10th November 2016 at 19:30: Public talk by Grant Rau: Marine Phosphate Mining in Namibia: The Truth of the Matter
Grant Rau is the chief geologist/geophysicist and environmental representative for the SAMICOR group. He has 25 years’ experience, mostly on the marine aspects of the west coast of Namibia and South Africa. Rau will discuss the more contentious environmental issues surrounding the mining of marine phosphates. His talk will also look at the socio-economic benefits of this new industry for Namibia.
Wednesday, 16th November 2016 at 19:30: Namibia Scientific Society in cooperation with NEWS, SAIEA and NCE: Public talk by Dr Chris Brown, Dr Peter Tarr and John Pallett: Marine phosphate mining – the EIA process and findings, and reaching a sensible decision. Dr Peter Tarr is the Director of the Southern African Institute for Environmental Assessment (SAIEA); dr Chris Brown is the CEO of the Namibian Chamber of Environment (NCE). Mr John Pallett is the Co-Chairperson of the Namibian Environment and Wildlife Society.
Friday, 18th November 2016 at 14:00: Namibia Scientific Society plays host to a happy party in it''s yard under the banner “Let´s Celebrate – Makietie – Fete”. Been working all year, so let’s party and look at what has been achieved. A year ago the fundraising campaign was launched and it was generously supported by members and friends; thus the Namibiana Book Collection can now officially be handed over. Donations and grants amount to a total of N$2.28 million. Three oryx and one ox were also donated and will be sold on the day of the festival from 14:00 as processed meat. Steak, boerewors, mince, goulash, soup bones etc. will be on sale, while coffee and cake and a cold beer (proudly sponsored by Namibia Breweries) will also be available. Swakopmunder Karnevalsverein will hand over a donation of N$11,111.11. Corporate Membership Certificates will be awarded and
a plate displaying the names of the donors will be inaugurated. Members of the public are invited to share a great get-together with members, friends, committee and staff.
Tuesday, 22nd November – Friday, 25th November: 08:00 – 17:00: Jumble sale/flea market: Books – different topics and genres, old books, new books and magazines
29th November 2016 at 19:30: Ambassadors’ talk: High Commissioner of South Africa H.E. Mavivi Myakayaka-Manzini. Details will follow.
Thursday, 01st December 2016 at 19:30: English presentation by Jimmy Zimmer: Angola – ever changing. Focus will be on the following highlights of Angola: Million City Lubango; settlement of the Dorsland Trekkers at Humpata; Tunda Vala, the breath-taking gorge cut out of the volcanic Chela Escarpment; the spectacular Sierra de Leba Pass of 1970 built by a woman; Christo de Rey statue, a copy of the monument in Rio de Janeiro; Benguela and Lobito with fine beaches and interesting history; the Deutsche Straße where especially German farmers with farm labourers left their footsteps and sweat developing the land. This event serves as an introduction to the Namibia Scientific Society’s tour to Angola in May 2017.
Jimmy Zimmer is a passionate Namibian tour guide, an expert on remote areas within Namibia and neighbouring countries. As he lived in Portugal from 1983 -1996 he came to know the Portuguese life style and learned the language. Since 1997 he is back home and bought Southern Cross Safaris Namibia and New Moon Safaris in Botswana. Always searching for new destinations, Angola was a destination of special historic interest to him. He mainly concentrated on routes to south-western Angola. With former German families he visited their homes before they left the country around 1974. He knows adventurous roads, had emotional meetings with farm labourers and profound stories to listen to.
All events are open to the public. The venue is the Namibia Scientific Society, Robert Mugabe Ave 110, opposite National Theatre. Safe parking is awailable in yard via Love street entrance.
