José Canjulo competed in the Northern Tigers Swimming (NTS) Prestige Gala at the Hillcrest Swimming pool in Pretoria, South Africa.

He was the only Namibian swimmer at the event and currently trains with Rocco Meiring from Tukssport. The young swimming prodigy was honoured to be invited to this exclusive gala, which is by invitation only.

Canjulo did the unthinkable by coming first in the 50m breaststroke in a time of 30.14 seconds, which set a new meet record in the process, and by also coming first in the backstroke in a time of 27.16 seconds, which is also the new meet record.

Sending out her congratulatory message on behalf of the Namibia Swimming Federation (NASFED) was Nicky McNamara, an executive committee member of NASFED.

“Congratulations José. José puts serious time and effort into his swimming and he is clearly reaping the rewards,” she said.

The NTS, one of the biggest aquatic clubs in South Africa, hosts a number of aquatic activities such as swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, open-water swimming, masters’ aquatics and water polo. So it was quite memorable for Canjulo to go to the NTS and set new records there.

Here are Canjulo’s results for the gala:

1st - 50m Breaststroke 30.14 seconds

1st - 50m Backstroke 27.16 seconds

2nd -200m Individual Medley 2 hours 16.41

3rd - 100m Butterfly 59.86 seconds

3rd - 50m Butterfly 26.57 seconds
