China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) celebrated 2 million man hours without injuries on Friday at the National Oil Storage Facilities project in Walvis Bay.
According to project manager Feng Yuan Fei the project is now 75% completed and will be finished by June 2018.
“A quantity of 9 million cubic metres' dredging works to the entrance channel and turning basin were all completed by October last year. The main structure of the jetty and terminal will be completed in about two months, 60% of the 7 km pipeline has been finished and 50% of tank installations at the tank farm has been completed.”
He highlighted some of the many challenges they face in safety management.
“There are more than 800 employees on site from different cultures who also speak different languages. There are numerous contractors on site and everyday more than 200 kinds of equipment are running on site. This includes several special work vessels, lifting equipment, three concrete batching plants and one CMB batching plant, welding machines and earth work equipment.”
“This project has been involved in dredging and marine structure works which need to build a 1,5 km temporary steel jetty for access and as a work platform, a pipeline and tank farm, road and rail works, underground service rerouting as well as electrical works. We haven three different site offices to deal with different work locations.”
He also mentioned that during this time, “a very special hydrogen sulfide gas” was discovered, but they have managed to control it.
“All these challenges did not stop us to reach this 2 million man hours without an incident milestone. We still have one year to go, let us continue to enforce our company’s SHE policy in the workplace to be incident and injury free.”
