Classic Jannie Moolman

Fans are in for ­classical music delight at this year's Omaruru Arts ­Festival.

Well-known South African opera singer Jannie Moolman will grace the stage with a classical concert at the 2019 Omaruru Arts Festival on 30 August from 20:00.

Moolman was previously part of the well-known group Ons Eie Drie Tenore.

He also performs with Jaren Meiring in the production Klassieke Pelle, written by Janice ­Honeyman, who is also the director.

He regularly shares the stage with Rina Hugo, after they collaborated on the highly successful KKNK (Klein Karoo National Arts Festival) production Gé Korsten: Hoor my lied.

Moolman released his first solo album in April 2003.

He was born in KwaZulu-­Natal, South Africa, and began his career as a tenor in 1990 after completing a degree in communication at the University of the Free State.

He joined the Pretoria State Theatre as a solo artist in 1992 and became involved in various stage productions like Attila, Der Rosenkavalier, Lucia di Lammermoor, Pagliacci, Le Nozze di Figaro, Idomeneo, Der Fliegende Hollander, Turandot, Manon Lescaut and Fidelio Salome.

Moolman made his debut at the Cape Town ­Opera as Rene in The Count of Luxembourg in 1994.

He received various awards, including the FNB Vita Life Award for the most promising singer­, as Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor (1992), and the State Theatre/ SAA ­Opera Foundation Award (1993).

He was also awarded second place in the Marsala International Singing competition in Italy and received the FNB Vita Life Award for the best performance by a male singer (1997).

He obtained a third place in the well-known Belvedere International Song Competition in ­Vienna and received another FNB Vita Life Award for his performance as Dominee Venter in Roelof Temmingh's Buchuland in 1998.

He was also nominated for a FNB Vita Life Award for his unique role as Price Karl Franz in The Student Prince and performed throughout the world in countries like Austria, Germany, England, Hong Kong, China and various African countries.

Moolman will be supported by a select group of musicians known as the Con Spirito Ensemble­ during his Under the Stars Classical Concert in Omaruru.

The cream of Namibian instrumentalists combined their musical talents as members of this exceptional and pleasing group.

The leader of the Con Spirito Ensemble, Christa Lambrechts, founded the group especially for the Omaruru Arts Festival to accompany the highly accomplished guest singers.

The ensemble consists of violinists, a double bass player, flutist, saxophonist, French horn player and percussionist.

The Con Spirito Ensemble members range from school-going learners to adult musicians.

They are all actively involved in the music world as band performers, ­ensemble or orchestra members, or solo instrumentalists.

The members are violinists Christa Lambrechts (music teacher), Christine Meintjes, Marion Klingelhoeffer, Jana Louw (17), Oliver Kittel (17); double bass player Heiner Kittel; flutist Stefanie Hryw­niak (music teacher); saxophonist Ian Hooks (15); French horn player Philipp Plarre and percussionist Christopher West, a music teacher based in Windhoek who regularly performs a wide repertoire, ranging from classical to light music.

The versatile musician and arranger Johan Kelber from Pretoria will join the ensemble on keyboard.

Kelber started his formal studies in music at the University of Stellenbosch in 1988.

He received a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree in 1992 and established a successful music production house that offered jingle writing, song writing, and sound track composing, producing, arranging, recording, mixing and mastering for almost all western music genres thinkable.

These genres include classic, rock, blues, pop, jazz, new-age, rhythm and blues, cabaret, rock and roll, soul, reggae, disco, opera, gospel, dance, country, movie soundtrack, musical comedy as well as heavy metal.

He has produced more than 700 audio tape, LP, CD, DVD and live show projects over more than three decades.
