Climbing the Choiseul ladder
Jo-Maré Duddy - Three Namibians have been included in this year’s Choiseul 100 Africa index for economic leaders.
First Lady Monica Geingos and Namibian Stock Exchange CEO Tiaan Bazuin feature for the fourth consecutive year, while Powercom CEO Alisa Amupolo made her debut.
The Choiseul 100 Africa is an annual study independently carried out by the Institut Choiseul. It identifies and ranks young African leaders under 40 years old who will play a major role in the continent’s economic development in the near future.
Both Geingos and Bazuin have improved their rankings since 2014.
Geingos, referred to as Kalondo Geingos in the index, made the list in her capacity as director of the Stimulus Group. She is ranked 46th on the Choiseul index this year, up from the 56th spot last year. In 2015 Geingos was ranked at number 64 and the previous year she was in 75th position.
Bazuin, chief executive officer of the NXS, came in at number 57 this year, up two positions from last year. In 2015 he was ranked 77th and in 2014 he held the 79th spot.
Amupolo entered the Choiseul 100 Africa index at number 99 this year.
Describing the top 100 this year, Institut Choiseul chairman Pascal Lorot said: “Their vision is closest to reality as they are the ones who make things happen and whose enthusiasm and dynamism pull their entire continent on the way to success. This general drive can be seen as a hindrance to the establishment and old elites but remains the promise of a better future for anyone willing to seize it.”
Governance
Lorot says a renewal of economic governance is noticeable at every corner of Africa.
“Since our first edition, we have made sure to select candidates from almost every African country and we have noticed that influence slowly transferred from traditional fields to promising sectors with a stronger added value and in need of finer skills and expertise. The diversification of African economies goes together with the increasing power of this new generation, ready to take the lead of a continent whose potential is unprecedented.”
According to Lorot all Choiseul laureates are “already models in their respective countries, regions and some even on a continental scale”.
“Our ranking presents the best individuals among this rising tide of talented, successful leaders and entrepreneurs, who take their part in the swift rise of Africa is the world’s economic landscape.”
Choiseul also has a top 200 African index. Ally Angula, managing director of Leap Holdings in Namibia, was included in this index this year.
