According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there were 88 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Africa yesterday by lunchtime.
Countries affected are: Morocco (2), Algeria (17), Tunisia (2), Egypt (55), Senegal (4), Togo (1), Nigeria (2), Cameroon (2) and South Africa (3). – WHO
Nigeria
Nigeria has a second confirmed coronavirus case, the country's health minister said on Twitter yesterday.
The first case was an Italian man who flew in to southwestern commercial capital Lagos on Feb. 24 from Milan on a Turkish Airlines flight that had a connection in Istanbul. The following day he travelled to neighbouring Ogun state and was in the country for nearly two full days before being isolated.
Health minister Osagie Ehanire said the second case had been in contact with the Italian man, who is a vendor working for cement company Lafarge Africa PLC and is being treated at a hospital in the Yaba dristict of Lagos.
The Lagos state health commissioner, Akin Abayomi, said on Saturday Nigerian officials were experiencing "some challenges" in tracking down people who were on the flight with the Italian. – Nampa/Reuters
Rwanda
City authorities in Kigali have banned concerts, rallies and other mass gatherings in the capital as a preventive measure against coronavirus, despite Rwanda recording no confirmed cases of the illness.
The small landlocked country is no stranger to imposing tough measures in response to health scares.
"The city of Kigali wishes to inform that entertainment shows, social gatherings, trade fairs, exhibitions and other gatherings that assemble many people ... are officially suspended till further notice," the Kigali city council announced in a statement Sunday.
The policy does not extend to venues hosting smaller numbers of people - such as wedding venues, churches, hotels, restaurants, bars, and sports clubs - which were told to apply "good hygiene practises" and supply soaps and hand washes.

Egypt
Egyptian crew and foreign passengers on a Nile cruise ship on which 45 suspected novel coronavirus cases had been detected disembarked Sunday in the southern city of Luxor.
The health ministry has said the 45 would be quarantined even though 11 of them had tested negative in follow-up tests.
The "A Sara" docked in Luxor days after authorities were alerted that a foreign tourist who had previously disembarked had contracted the virus and infected others on board.
On Saturday, health minister Hala Zayed said 33 people on the ship had tested positive without showing any symptoms.
