Aune Kanuni Shipandeni, the owner of NUNUCK Kiosk, is a resident of Kehemu informal settlement. She enrolled for a hospitality and tourism course in 2012 with COSDEC Tukurenu and was awarded with a certificate of competence.
In 2018, she enrolled for clothing production and managed to complete this course as well. She applied to COSDEC business development centre for an incubation, mentoring and coaching programme for entrepreneurs and moved into the unit in June 2019.
When Shipandeni moved in, she didn't know much about business management skills like costing and pricing, marketing, planning, organising, budgeting, customer services, writing quotes or invoices, compiling a financial report, quality standards, value addition, quality control, product development or bookkeeping.
Through the mentoring and coaching lessons offered, she now has knowledge and skills on how to run her business successfully.
Her business has improved and grown to such an extent that she now employs an assistant, and the two ensure that they have fresh food ready for breakfast for their clients who want to eat before starting with work.
The business is well marketed with the assistance of the business development coordinator and her customers increased from 15 to 30 per day. Since the demand is so great, they need to prepare food three times per day and also work on special orders which customers can place in advance.
