COVID-19 in Namibia: Data round up 25 - 28 May 2020

Current situation with official data by Thursday 28 May 2020 (showing changes since 24 May 2020) and prelimenary data announced this morning for yesterday.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The official date and time for the return to lockdown phase 1 for Walvis Bay Local Authority is noted as 19:00 on Thursday.
An additional 38 people who had contact with the two new cases in Walvis Bay were traced on Thursday. In total 121 new contacts have been traced since Monday.
No new positive cases reported. Case no. 22, hospitalised in Walvis Bay remains in an induced coma but is stable.
A total of 67 new tests were according to provisional information completed yesterday
Daily new tests remain below 100 for the last 7 days. This includes 9 retests.
A rapid response team was dispatched to assist in Hardap and //Kharas Regions and additional training for 46 staff members was conducted in Keetmanshoop and Karasburg.
Emergency drills were conducted at the Windhoek Central Hospital ICU facility on 23 May.
Daily calls to the COVID-19 hotline vary from about 500 to 1 000 per day.
In Erongo Region preparations were underway to quarantine 175 crew who have to come ashore from four oil vessels.

TESTING CAPACITY
Increased and decentralised testing remain a challenge amidst shortages of swabs.
NIP this week said 164 samples can currently be tested per day in Windhoek. Automated testing is expected to start by 8 June, which will allow for an additional 192 samples per day, bringing total capacity to 327.
By mid-June a total of 216 daily tests should be conducted in other towns as follows: Katima Mulilo 40, Keetmanshoop 80 and Oshakati 96. Technicians are busy setting up and calibrating equipment at these facilities and this should be completed by 5 June.
This will allow Namibia to run 543 tests per day.

QUARANTINE
Yesterday a total of 93 new individuals were quarantined and a group of 98 people were released from quarantine as per prelimenary data. Close to 2 000 people have been subjected to quarantine since 27 March.
The first quarantine numbers for Oshikoto Region were only reported on Thursday. A total of 22 people were quarantined in this region, of which 21 has already been discharged. One remain.
An adjustment of 31 was made to quarantine figures for Hardap Region on 26 May, and an adjusment of 47 in Zambezi Region on 28 May.
NMH has inquired about the reasons for the above and is awaiting feedback.
