Discover a hidden gem

Gerine Hoff
When driving to the Zambezi Region, most travellers assume that Divundu, Kavango East, is only a place for a quick stop-over on their way to game parks and fishing tales. What they do not realise is that they are driving through one of Namibia’s most precious hidden gems.

Divundu is filled with the rich culture of the Kavango people – women draped with colourful cloth, Nguni’s crossing the road every few meters, children playing in the river and men on the wato’s catching dinner with nothing but an earthworm on a hand line, and game parks teaming with wildlife.

Kavango East has become a destination in its own right; a place where you can spend your entire holiday, and you will not be bored especially if you book at the newly build Shametu River Lodge.

At Shametu River Lodge you will be experiencing the tranquillity of the Kavango River on your doorstep. In the vicinity are two parks forming part of the Bwabwata National Park - Mahango Game Park and Buffalo Core Area, where you are guaranteed to see at least two of the big five and many other antelopes you don’t really get to see in the rest of Namibia.

For birding enthusiasts you can spot the Wattled Crane, Pel’s Fishing Owl and African Skimmer, to name just a few.

There’s tiger fishing for the more adventurous, or you can treat yourself to a well-deserved massage or manicure at the mini spa.

Also, you are close enough to visit Tsodilo Hills in Botswana for the day - or just relax in the pool with a few of the calming river.

Waking up to the singing of the birds and roaring sound of the Poppa falls . . . What more could you ask for?

You don’t need to book a chalet or luxury safari tent, even our campsites are considered “glamping”.

I know, you are curious now!

Come and enjoy true Namibian hospitality where owners Louis and Amori Gerber will make you feel right at home.

At Shametu River Lodge you arrive as a guest and leave as a friend.
