Durant wins Rössmund title
Golf
Due to all the challenges of Covid-19, this year’s Rössmund Golf Club Championships was postponed and only took place last weekend.
For more than a decade Marsh Namibia, one of the leading insurance brokers, have been sponsoring this prestigeous competition.
It was inevitable that the coastal winds would play a role; this time around the south westerly winds of around 40 km/h, plus sand, stamped its mark on day 1 of the competition. This caused considerable havoc with the first round scores, especially at hole number 8.
In the A Division, Chris Durant managed to post a gross score of 76, three shots ahead of nearest rival Hans Naobeb, whilst well-known names such as Kevin Wentzel and Stephanus Bonifatius could only manage an 80 and 82 gross, respectively.
Day one’s B Division honours went to Helmut Ndjendja carding an 84 gross, with Miguel Tordesillas close on his heels with an 86.
In the C Division Athol McLean and Sebulon Tsuseb were neck and neck on 94 gross; Justin Naobeb was leading the Juniors and Mariena Ludwig had her nose in front in the Ladies division.
Day 2 brought much improved weather conditions, although some of the golfers were still a bit disorientated and did not manage to improve their scores. There were two-clubs coming from Stephanus Bonifatius and Dean Kock.
The overall leader Chris Durant however managed to keep his cool and played some consistent golf to shoot a second round 76 gross, with Kevin and Stephanus coming into the mix with a 77 and 78 gross respectively.
David Peake set the cat amongst the pigeons in the B Division, carding a 86 gross, but failed to topple the leader Helmut Ndjendja who came into the clubhouse with an 80 gross.
Leader Athol McLean shot an 87 gross to give him the C Division title, while in the Ladies division, Justine Shikulo had the best round of the day with a 107 gross.
On behalf of Marsh Namibia, Marlene Bougaard was on hand from the sponsor to assist at the prize-giving.
