Measures to increase productivity of land

Catherine Sasman - Final discussions on the N$140 million Namibia Integrated Landscape Approach for enhancing Livelihoods and Environmental Governance to Eradicate Poverty (the NILALEG) commenced yesterday.

The programme has been under discussion for the last three years and is expected to be implemented over 2019 to 2025.

It aims to improve environmental governance and sustainable management of Namibia’s natural resources. The programme is being implemented in the northern parts of the country.

It was originally conceived to ensure a synergised implementation of the Rio Conventions on the ground and is supposed to support actions to conserve and sustainably use bio-diversity, climate change mitigating measures, and actions that will increase the productivity of land and forest resources.

Executive director of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Teofilus Nghitila, said it is hoped that the actions and impacts of the project will improve the livelihoods of particularly rural communities.

He said this will be achieved through support to restore degraded land, agro-forestry and sustainable crop and rangeland management, as well as nature-based enterprise development through tourism and value-addition and processing of natural resources.

The programme intends to also protect and restore forests as carbon sinks.

The project is funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
