Erongo constructs 2 287 houses
Local authorities urged to continue striving towards quality housing for all and facilitate partnerships with private entities.
The Erongo region has in the financial year 2019/20 constructed a total of 2 287 houses of the 60 000 houses envisioned for the region in five years.
The Walvis Bay municipal area has delivered about 1 754 houses from a combined construction of the Build Together and Mass Urban land servicing projects under the 2019/20 financial year.
“On the other hand, the Swakopmund Municipality has fast-tracked the Build Together programme and provided 149 houses for this segment.
Meanwhile, as part of its decongestion strategy which had already commenced, 133 houses were constructed through the Afrinna Housing development partnership,” the governor announced.
The Omaruru town council has constructed 105 houses, Henties Bay 102 and Arandis 44 houses respectively, out of the 3 000 houses each envisioned for the towns in the next five years.
Affordable housing
The Swakopmund municipality also approved an eight-block development which will release 148 hectares of land, which will yield approximately 1 300 residential erven and 30 business erven to address the medium to long-term objective of providing housing for the ultra-low, low-income and middle-income demographics.
It will also enhance tenure security for all homeowners despite their economic status, providing social housing that has a rent-to-own option.
This option enhances access to affordable housing for low-income and middle-income earners that do not have access to credit financing,” he noted.
Karibib town council has provided serviced land to the National Housing Enterprise (NHE) which is currently constructing 72 houses at the town.
“The council further commenced with the construction of 74 out of 308 low-cost houses in Omdel, Extension 7 at Henties Bay, concurrently with the construction of basic services which are all expected to be completed in October 2020,” Itope added.
