Last year’s under 14 champions, Eros Primary School, took an early lead after last weekend’s competitive matches in the FNB primary schools league of the Namibia Tennis Association for the Khomas region.
Ten primary schools from the Khomas region are competing this year in the FNB schools league, while regional championships are played in the Erongo, Oshana and Otjozondjupa regions. The best schools from each region will be invited to participate in the national tennis school team championship which will be held on 22 October in Windhoek.
Each school team consists of four boys and four girls. The matches are played in “Play & Stay” tennis format which features softer and bigger tennis balls, as well as lower nets. Matches are played on smaller courts, which help junior players to learn match tactics and techniques at an early age. Players compete in the u.10, u.12 and u.14 age groups.
Parkies Primary School overcame a strong Mandume PS team in a fiery battle in last Wednesday’s round. Dagbreek Special School’s u.14 boys made their presence felt with a winning performance against Emma Hoogenhout Primary School. Last Friday, Eros u.10 girls were too strong for Kleine Professor, while Hermann Gmeiner scored a dramatic six-all draw against the dangerous Eros Primary. Delta went down to Hermann Gmeiner, but Sytisha Goagoses from Delta kept a clean sheet by winning all her matches in the league to date.
Schools that want their teachers to do a tennis course or who want to enter a team in the school league, can contact the FNB NTA School league coordinator Kallie Heese at [email protected] or 081-28 68031.
