Taking a personal stance in the fight against cancer in the country, the First Lady of the Republic of Namibia, Ms Monica Geingos, committed herself to “walk cancer out of Namibia” by joining hands with the Cancer Association of Namibia and RadioWave at the first annual National Cancer Walk.
The event is presented under theme “RadioWave Walk for Life – let’s walk cancer out of town” and will take place on Saturday, 3 September 2016 in various towns including Windhoek, Rehoboth, Swakopmund, Lüderitz, Walvisbay and Tsumeb. Ms Geingos reiterated during a visit to Statehouse by CAN CEO, Mr Rolf Hansen, she personally commits herself to walk the 5 km distance with team CAN and the Windhoek community in solidarity in the fight against cancer in Namibia. She challenged Namibians and other key stakeholders to take up arms and educate, create awareness and stand together in the fight against cancer in Namibia.
The First Lady committed her support of the cause of cervical cancer in Namibia; stating that young Namibian women need to be educated on sexual conduct so as to fight the spread of HPV infection and subsequent health consequences.
“The Cancer Association of Namibia is very proud to be associated with the Office of the First Lady and applauds the commitment and support by Ms Geingos and her team, to help create awareness and in the spirit of unity and healthy living, ‘walk cancer out of our town’,” said Hansen.
Entry fees are N$75 per person and N$50 per learner entering as a school. All participants taking part in the walk will receive a medallion of completion to signify their support in the fight against cancer.
The National Cancer Walk funds are earmarked for the CHICA (Children Fighting Cancer in Namibia) Fund. The social media hashtag #canwalk4life will guide followers online about ticketing and activities, while the Cancer Association and representatives can be contacted for more information at 061 237 740 or [email protected]
