Golf: Lohmann wins Omeya Junior Open
The Namibian junior golf team participated in trials at the Omeya Golf Course that will help them get one step closer to competing in Egypt at the end of March 2022.
Elizabeth Joseph – Charlie Lohmann emerged as the overall winner by five shots in last weekend's Omeya Junior Open – after holding the joint lead with eventual runner-up Todd Parker after the first day.
Both these ambitious 16-year-old players are registered at the host club.
According to Namibia Junior Golf president, Adri Pienaar, the national junior golf team is due to compete in Egypt at the end of March 2022.
“For the juniors (up to 18 years), we host nine tournaments a year and use these results to draw up merit lists for the A division, from which we select the national team that will compete in the All Africa Confederation tournament. This year, it will be hosted in Egypt,” Pienaar said.
Last Saturday was the first of three trial tournaments, which will resume in early February at the Rössmund course at Swakopmund, and concludes on the last weekend of February in Tsumeb. Following the Tsumeb tournament, the team to represent Namibia in Egypt will be announced.
Pienaar further mentioned that these participations should be good for the Namibian team's preparation, because last year they didn't have any tournaments that could be used to draw up a merit list.
The A division contenders (handicap index from 0 to 16.2) played 18 holes on Saturday and Sunday, both rounds in the medal format.
Players in the B and C divisions played 18 holes on both days (stableford format), while the D division, for those without a handicap, only played on Saturday over six shortened holes from 200, 250 and 300 metres medal format.
A one-day format for beginners (age 5 to 10) was also presented over six shortened holes on Saturday.
Last weekend's top results:
A Division overall winner: 1 Charlie Lohmann 152 gross, 2 Todd Parker 157.
A Division overall best nett: 1 Christiaan Spangenberg 141, 2 Tiaan Voight 146.

C Division winner: F. Le Roux 76 points.

E Division (beginners) winner: Emery Emaboth 26 shots.
