Shiny chrome, exquisite bodywork, iconic merchandise and the intermittent roar of powerful motorcycle engines were the order of the day on Saturday at M&Z Motorcycles - Harley-Davidson on Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo Street in Windhoek.

General manager Guilliaume Kruger, who also represents the local Harley Owners’ Group (HOG) chapter, played host to scores of enthusiasts who gathered to enjoy special opportunities like an in-store barber, a tattoo studio, plenty of food and refreshments, as well as all things Harley-Davidson.

He was happy to welcome Harley lovers of all ages, shapes and sizes to the open day, which also featured special offers on motorbikes and accessories.

“This is fun for our customers who enjoy the free beverages, the barber shop experience, the tattoo parlour and lekker get-together. It is a perfect opportunity for us to get the brand out there and to attract new people to the dealership,” he says.

Harley lifestyle spreading

According to Kruger Namibia has a healthy and growing Harley-Davidson community, full of members who do their bit to place the country on the map of Harley-Davidson world.

His HOG chapter is one of a growing number of motorcycling clubs in the country. It has more than 120 members and the Harley owners eagerly welcome new enthusiasts to the fold, he says.

The Namibian chapter was registered as an official Harley Owners’ Group on 24 July 2013, consisting of 33 founding members.

The club will be instrumental in organising this year’s Skeleton Coast Rally, starting at Swakopmund in May. The event is shaping up to be one of the biggest of the year and Kruger is particularly excited about it, expecting more than 500 participating riders from all over Africa and even Germany.

Harley-Davidson is about more than just the incredible machines, Kruger explains. “It is a lifestyle and a brotherhood that encompasses everything from clothes to jewellery.”

The next opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonderful world of Harley will be on 6 April, when the Ladies of Harley will host a one-night event at Omaruru. Participants should contact the HOG club before 20 March to book a place.

Harley throughout history

In 1907, more than 40 manufacturers in the United States were producing and selling motorcycles. Among these was Hendee Manufacturing, maker of the iconic Indian motorcycles, which was well on its way to establishing itself as an industry superpower. The founders of Harley-Davidson and their thirteen employees knew what they were up against.

By 1920, there were about 2 000 Harley-Davidson dealers in 67 different countries, just 16 years after CH Lang first took a chance on a little company from Milwaukee. During the 1920s, overseas sales made as much as 75% of the amount earned by dealers in the United States.

Harley-Davidson remains a global presence in the motorcycle industry. Without a network of enthusiastic dealers, Harley-Davidson would not have survived the Great Depression, and possibly would have foundered in the challenging period from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. It's a relationship that didn't merely stand the test of time, but defined a shared heritage.

Find it alive and kicking at the local Harley-Davidson dealership in Windhoek’s Suiderhof suburb.
