Governor welcomes tourists to the Erongo Region

IT is my great honour and privilege to welcome you all to the great Erongo Region. I am pleased and honoured to have you at our coastal towns. It is therefore on behalf of the people and the Regional Council I beg your understanding and forbearance if some circumstances in our region do not meet with your expectations. We have, I assure you, done our best to make your stay amongst us a memorable one for both our esteemed guests and we as your host.

I hope and trust that the warmth of our hospitality will compensate for whatever material shortcomings there may be. My heart is filled with emotion to see you all here and I am proud that our region is your host. Allow me to take a short and a historic journey with you to acquaint you with the Erongo Region. My short journey will be covering what this region is able to offer specifically to our tourists and our visitors alike.

Not forgetting my fellow Namibians who might not have explored this region. The Erongo Region has a population of 120 000 and the region remains at the heart of Namibia’s tourism activities. Swakopmund is not only the regional capital, but also the summer capital of the country, because of its unique natural air conditioning produced by the Atlantic Ocean. Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Henties Bay with their last born Arandis are popular holiday destinations in our beloved Namibia.

The fishing industry, Namport and the uranium mines are keeping all towns alive, while the small and medium entrepreneurs are keeping the economy moving with the expectations that the banking institutions may one day drop their high unaffordable interest rates for the upcoming entrepreneurs. The scenery of the sand dunes of the Namib Desert and the sparkling blue water of the Atlantic Ocean are some of the attractions in the tourism industry.

The Brandberg is one of the highest and biggest mountains in our region being visited by hundreds of tourists on an annual basis. One needs time to visit all our beautiful sceneries such as the Spitzkoppe, where one can camp and associate with nature. When it gets dark while at Spitzkoppe, the birds sing their songs and the twinkling of stars are contributing to the feeling of being part of the creation and a stress free life.

The Namib Desert has become the gold if not the diamond of the tourists, springbuck and other game is keeping the desert alive. Visit our Namib Desert, look at the oryx and springbuck, apart from being the gold of the desert, they are beautifying nature. Do not drive too fast in the desert, stop a little bit, take out your camera, direct it to the game, you will make millions of dollars from the living desert of Namibia!

From the desert our next destination will be Cape Cross where we harvest the seals. It is a must to visit Cape Cross if you are not from this region. From Cape Cross towards the south, Erongo will be meaningless if one does not talk about fishing. If you are from any other region in Namibia and beyond and need a fresh fish from the ocean, Henties Bay is the best of the coastal towns. It is the only town where fish can be caught from the balcony.

From Henties Bay, the road will take us to Swakopmund. One cannot afford to bypass Swakopmund, the mega of tourism in Namibia. It’s well organised museum and aquarium are both being admired by our tourists. Tourists and students who are studying marine resources in the SADC countries and beyond should be advised to visit the aquarium in Swakopmund, where they will admire how the fish are celebrating their freedom under the water without any disturbances from human beings.

From Swakopmund you can go to Arandis where we have the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology where young Namibians are being trained and prepared to work in mining and heavy industrial companies. A green town in the desert strategic positioned for any investment you want to embark upon, consider Arandis the beautiful town in the desert. But maybe you decide to make Walvis Bay your final destination.

The sea and the dunes are visible alongside the road and quad bikes and 4x4 lovers are always trying to reach the top of Dune 7 but so far they have failed. We in Erongo advise our visitors that the best way to get to the top of Dune 7 is by foot and come rolling from the top to the bottom and experience how nature can be admired without hurting yourself. Namport is the final destination while in Walvis Bay.

The port of Walvis Bay is the natural gateway for international trade to and from the SADC region to Europe and America offering the shortest access route for the regions around the globe. The port of Walvis Bay is a secured, efficient, world-class port. The port is managed by competitive management and a board of directors. Its turnaround time is competitive, with handling times for container vessels of around 12 to 15 hours, depending on tonnage.

The port has worldclass infrastructure and equipment. It ensures reliable and safe cargo. It’s linked to Namibia’s air, rail and road networks, making it well situated to serve land locked countries which we, now in the region call the destination countries from the harbour of Walvis Bay. The port of Walvis Bay is committed not only to serve globalization at large but also SADC countries without any reservations, to demonstrate this the management of Namport has already put up store facilities for our neighbouring countries at the port of Walvis Bay, where these countries will be able to store their goods before transporting them to their final destinations.

What a dedication and determination to make Africa free and contributing to smooth globalisation in terms of trade, Namport is the gateway. I hope that our esteemed guests have acquainted them with the great Erongo Region. But I cannot afford to let you off the hook without informing you that Erongo is the mother of uranium, gold and marble, which we export beyond the Atlantic Ocean without adding value to it.

What a pity! One day we shall overcome this and add value to what we do not do now. Erongo is the mother of tourmaline, amethyst, black tourmaline, and the crystal stones which is the mother of all the precious stones. When one wants to beautify his/ her fingers better identify the precious stones which are being produced or mined from Erongo Region without forgetting Karas Region which is the mother of the diamonds.

If you need excellent service better visit our hotels and restaurants where you as our respected clients are being valued beyond your expectations. Our service providers in this region are always being appreciated by our visitors. While you are in our region and you decide to take a walk at our beaches you are being provided free of charge with cool and unpolluted air to breath in.

If you decide to swim in the sea at the beach after a long day, you are not being charged any cost because that is part of the incentive package that we can give to you for you to come back on holiday provided that you have booked in our hotels and holiday resorts. May God bless.
