Happiness for Hanganeni members
Shore fishermen who are members of a local association benefited from a donation of fishing gear.
Tunacor fishing company recently donated rods, reels and fishing line to 45 dedicated members of Hanganeni Artisanal Fishing Association (Hafa) in Henties Bay.
The initiative was founded by the ministry of fisheries and marine resources to create employment, with an estimated 100 coastline fishers currently benefitting from it.
Gerrie Hough, managing director of Namsov of which Tunacor is a subsidiary, said the donation is a token of his support for the Hanganeni fishing programme and the individuals who keep the project afloat.
The assortment of Penn graphite rods and Daiwa Multiplier reels, all loaded with different kinds of Rapala Double X fishing line, were handed to the fishermen by Hough and Graham Gramowski of Swakopmund Outdoor Centre, the company which supplied the rods, reels and fishing line.
The Henties Bay mayor and director of Hanganeni, Hermann /Honeb, and the chairperson of the Hanganeni board, Claudius Ikera, relayed their gratitude on behalf of Hafa and its members.
Transportation
Tunacor also sponsored the branding of a new Hafa truck which will transport 29 Hanganeni fishers to the sea for work each day.
/Honeb said the governance aspect of Hafa was being transformed and strengthened with more sound corporate practicing principles. He added that the donation will help Hanganeni fishermen and women alike.
Hannes Hoases, a representative of the fishermen, thanked Tunacor and Outdoor Centre Swakopmund for their kindness.
“We will take care of these gifts. That's what one does when somebody blesses you from the kindness of their hearts. We also wholeheartedly welcome this support which enables us to provide for our families.”
The recipients are all active full members of the Hafa initiative. They are full-time shore anglers, participate in Hanganeni's corporate decision-making process, and have access to benefits such as a health scheme, social security, accident support and funeral support.
Unlimited catches
Special fishing permits allow them unlimited catches, with exception to breeding stock and a limit of five big fish (± 70 cm in size) a day.
Hafa requires that at least five positions be reserved specifically for women who are interested in becoming members, in a bid to empower them. Hanganeni also honoured six women at the event with new equipment.
