Harambee grass for the Kunene
KALKFELD FARMER WRITES:
Most of Namibia was blessed with good rains in 2021, except - at least so far - the North-West corner, the Arid Eden, Kunene.
Now is the time to care and share, in the spirit of Harambee.
North of the Omatako the road verges can be harvested by the Roads Authority, 20 meters either side. The NDF, in peacetime can transport the grass to depots in Kunene to save breeding livestock and in feedlots fatten farm cattle to match the carrying capacity for sale. Fire breaks are created as a bonus and guinea fowl, warthog accidents reduced.
Men from Kunene can assist.
In the grass harvest, Ministry of Poverty Eradication can assist with rations. Ministry of Agriculture can back up water and veterinary support, as well as salt block licks.
Help people to help themselves, to maintain self-respect and purpose. Think of harmony with nature and the legacy of Garth Owen Smith and his people, Himba and Damara. As in the past, a drought fee levy can be charged to cover the (30c/litre) cost of diesel for truck transport.
If we help people and beasts in distress, the joy and gratitude is mutual.
Yes, together we can!
