Hats off to our firefighters
". . . they normally only get complaints."
CLARE GALLOWAY WRITES:
I would like to extend thanks and congratulations to the Windhoek Fire Department, and in particular C-Shift.
Last Tuesday, 16 June, we were having a quiet evening, keeping warm in front of the fire on a very cold night. The chimney of the wood-burning stove got so hot that it set the ceiling alight.
We managed to kill the flames with the hosepipe from the garden outside, which luckily was quite close. I called the emergency number and was answered immediately. I gave my details and within two minutes Mr. Cloete of C-Shift called to say they were on their way.
Within ten minutes the fire truck had arrived in Klein Windhoek from the Northern Industrial Headquarters and the safety officer Mr. Johannes arrived shortly thereafter.
The crew was fantastic. They were professional, polite, caring, concerned and beyond helpful. They made sure that the flames and sparks in the ceiling and wooden rafters were completely extinguished and then still insisted on cleaning up the mess.
If we had gone to bed, the whole house would have burned down, with us in it. You can imagine what a terrifying thought that is.
I went to collect the report for insurance purposes from Headquarters and I took C-Shift some cake and cold drinks to express my thanks. Again, I was impressed with the professionalism and efficiency at the Station.
I was met by the Fire Chief Mr Kapia and Duty Officers and the crew. To my utter surprise, I was told that this was the first time they had been thanked by anyone, as they normally only get complaints.
I was shocked to hear this and would like to draw attention to the unbelievable job these fire-fighters do, at their own personal risk, to save lives and property.
It would be good if you could do an expose of them and their work, to give them the recognition they so deserve.
The crew was:
Mr Cloete, Maketu, Mundia, Gertze, Hochobeb, Kamwanga, Job and Haikali and the safety officer was Mr Johannes.
