The Chevening scholarship

Most people might not know what a Chevening scholarship is. Well, it’s the United Kingdom (UK) government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth (FCO) and partner organisations.

The programme offers awards to outstanding students with leadership potential from around the world to study for a master’s degree in any subject at any university in the UK.

The purpose of this scholarship is to enable outstanding emerging leaders from all over the world to pursue a one-year master’s degree in the UK.

There is no typical Chevening scholar, they are looking for the kind of people who have passion, ideas and influence to provide solutions and leadership needed to create a better future.

The scholarship is a fully-funded - flights, accommodation and course fees are all included. This will allow the scholar to be free to focus on achieving their professional goals and maximising the experience of a lifetime.

Joyce Taati Luanda is a selected Chevening scholar for the year 2021/2022 and said she will take this opportunity to experience the UK culture and build lasting positive relationships.

On completing her studies, she is certain that she will leave the UK equipped with the knowledge and networks necessary to bring her own ideas to life.

Luanda reflects on her Chevening journey being a roller coaster so far, while also being a great opportunity for reflection and retrospection.

“I can vividly remember receiving the email from the Chevening Secretariat stating that I have been awarded this prestigious scholarship. I felt a great sense of accomplishment. I was and still am so proud of myself because it was no easy journey, it required me to be focused, determined and patient,” she said.

The question is, how prestigious is the Chevening scholarship?

Chevening awards are highly competitive and to be selected for one is a mark of potential and prestige. When Cheveners return home at the end of their studies, the new knowledge, networks, qualifications and confidence they bring back with them should mean they are an even greater asset to any organisation.

Well-known Chevening scholars include prominent leaders in Namibia such as Peter Shivute - Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Namibia; Bisey Uirab – CEO of Namibia Airports Company, and Dr Tjitunga Elia Nghurare - former secretary-general of the Swapo Party Youth League.

This makes it evident that this a remarkable scholarship that shapes and assists future leaders to influence their respective professions through the education, networking opportunities and skills gained during their time in the UK.

The programme is highly competitive and receives applications from all eligible countries and territories. With more than 130 countries participating in the award, the scholarship is very competitive drawing almost 100 000 applicants. Only +-1.5% of the participants are shortlisted and awarded.

Luanda shares three stages of the Chevening scholarship process.

1. Online application (submission of bio information and essays)

The essay graders are trained to fish out how your potential academic, leadership and professional experiences will be beneficial to your home country in the long run.

2. Interview

Unfortunately, only a few can get the scholarship award. If you get called up for an interview, you have a golden chance to prove yourself.

The interview is a relaxed one but very competitive. The panel have boxes to tick. It is up to you to provide answers to make their job ‘easier’!

3. Selection

I call it the “waaaaaiiiiit”. At this stage, all you do is wait for an email from the British High Commission/embassy with one of the following headings:

Congratulations, you have been selected…

The interview panel was impressed with your performance during the interview, however, due to limited space, you are put on the “reserve list”…

We regret to inform you...

Applications close on 3 November at 12:00 GMT (which is 10:00 CAT).
