• “My name is Charl du Plooy. I am one of the junior cyclists that will be representing Namibia in the junior category of the World Road Cycling Championships which will be held in Bergen, Norway.
In the beginning of 2017, Raul Costa Seibeb and I went to the World Cycling Centre Africa in Potchefstroom, South Africa. There I learned many tips and tricks from Costa which has helped me improve a lot as a cyclist. I looked up to Costa as my mentor and during every race I still remember the things he has taught me.
Recently I represented Namibia at the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas. I rode next to some of the best under 17s in the world. I was excited to see that I can compete with the world's best, finishing 18th out of 36 starters in the individual time trial – only 20 seconds between myself and 8th place.
In the road race I did just as well. I came 22nd from 42 starters. We were in a bunch finish at the end with position 6 to 25 all in the same bunch, with less than three seconds between us all.
In Norway I will be proud to represent Namibia and show that a country as small as ours can compete with the best in the world and do my best. I want to perform better than in the Bahamas and know that I can with the experience that I gained.
I will ride in honour of the late Raul Costa Seibeb, who I really miss and I remember all the things he showed and taught me through the years.”
